[Vancouver Canucks] “Hronek expressed his interest of wanting to stay in Vancouver and be part of this group for long-term. We were extremely pleased to get it over the finish line here.” 🗣 G.M. Patrik Allvin meets with the media following the club agreeing to terms with defenceman Filip Hronek.

Quick Summary:
Allvin liked that Hronek wanted to stay long term and was enthusatic about being a part of the team for a long time to come. Relieved to get the deal done so they can focus on other things
Hronek’s age, handedness, and skill were all reasons why the team felt comfortable with 8 years, Alllvin noted it would have been difficult to find a player that was comparable to Hronek if he was not re-signed.
Allvin admits that they likely will not be able to re-sign all of their free agents but will continue to have discussions over the next two weeks.
Wouldn’t confirm that Hronek was injured (JPat’s question lol) but noted that he felt the whole team slowed down offensively in the second half of the season. Called the 13 games of playoff experience important for Hronek and the team moving forward, and feels that Hronek has another level to his game that he can still unlock.
Asked if the team is looking specifically for another RHD in free agency Allvin says he’s not sure yet. Notes that Noah Juulsen and Cole McWard are considered internally as potential options to step up but wouldn’t commit either way.

Makes sense. This was Alvin’s first big move as the GM and ultimately changed the course of the team direction. We desperately needed a steady, stable partner for Hughes and he struck gold with this trade. How often does a 25 year old RHD hit the trade market?
Sure, we could go on and on about trading Hronek and rolling the dice with Pesce or Montour, but neither would be that much cheaper nor is it a guarantee they will sign and succeed with us. Not to mention, every UFA is older and either in their prime or out of it.
We literally got the best case scenario and re-signed a legit top RHD. The cap is fair, and term is better. Now we are one legit winger for Pettersson to be a contender. I really hope we can land Guentzel, because this team is close to complete after that.

Nice! That’s below what hronek would have gotten from arb or as a ufa next year, so it’s a win for the canucks.
