Tom Fitzgerald’s BIG GAME HUNTING has officially begun!
The New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames FINALLY finalized a trade to send Jacob Markstrom to the NJ Devils.
I expect a very active offseason for Fitz, and now Step 1 is out of the way.
I dive a little deeper into this long overdue trade and reflect on what this means for the New Jersey Devils.

Now that we've got goal tending….Brady Tkachuk should DEFINITELY be the next target. Imagine slotting Brady in on Jack's left wing 😎 other than that I like Betuzzi (free agent), Zadorov (free agent), Montour (free agent), Brady Skjei (free agent). This season needs to be a 100% push for the cup.
THE 2024 -25 (AND FUTURE) NEW JERSEY DEVILS – DEATH BY "DUMP AND CHASE"
Than who???? This is what I know as fact. In his NHL draft year he has a horrible WJC and Tedenby has a very good good WJC…..THAT is how old he is, but that is okay ..(.I make this point for a reason) it is normal for a young Euro goalie to have a rough WJC since it's the first time on a smaller rink surface, different crease. It really can mess with your mind…I was a goalie for 17 years and have scouted and still do for a guy named Fischler…ever hear of him?? He was drafted by Vancouver and he then went to the Flames. Btw, Canucks have a much better goalie situation be it the young kid or Demko. Jacob had one of the WORST playoff series ever vs half assed Oilers team. In the past 4 years they drafted a young great goalie in Dustin Wolf, who led Stockton to deep playoff runs two years in row (twice AHL goalie of the year) however his growth hampered by MARKSTROM and NOT cause of his play, but the size (dollar and term wise). In fairness, this was Jacob's best year in a long time. Helped by a new goal scorer. A kid named Sharongovich…ever hear of the kid??? So the Flames have been wanting to move on to free up money and play the future …the future is now for the Flames: Dustin Wolf. Now, enter our beloved NJ Devils (who I have loved since day one in 1982 however I am a Hockey fan first and became a HUGE Russian (then Soviet) fan 1979. Now my fave CHL (WHL) The Red Deer (Alberta) Rebels. Many of them Flames fans and talk about a fan base wanting a player gone….THEY ARE DANCING IN THE STREETS RIGHT NOW. They just wished their other new D man Nikita Okhotyuk stayed, remember him??? Nope. Nikita has enough of the BS NHL. I will explain in a bit. A guy named Sergei Fedorov who is now the GM of my beloved (sinvec1979) CSKA RED ARMY MOSCOW. The most decorated club team in all of hockey ( more than the Habs). They need to rebuild their D and that starts with Okhotyuk..THAT is how good he is. Wow, they could have Nikita and Bahl….JUST LIKE WE DID. SO, let's go back to the 2022 HOCKEY NEWS "FUTURE'S WATCH" annual magazine. The over boys? Our beloved NJD. I have two of them and one is framed. It takes a lot of losing and tears to get that cover oh and btw drafting well and key trades. Most of that drafting and deals made by Ray Shero (who I dreamed we still had. ,) Anyway, we built a very …very good future young Def D man (not offensive D but stay at home. D corps. Our top 3: Kevin Bahl, Nikita Okhotyuk and Shakir Mukhamdullin. Nikita in March 2022 was for 2 games (After Jack hurt by the NYI) was called "our best player on the ice" by Ruff. Shakir 3 weeks later debuted in the 2022 playoffs vs Rochester. Now I bet you watched every game right? Btw, it SICKENS ME HOW LEES out fan base watches our AHL team. Shakir stepped in and had 2 points …was the QB of our PP….HIS FIRST EVER PRO HOCKEY GAME. The end of game 1 saw Nikita at the other end of the ice offering out the entire Rochester bench to a fight …sticking up for his teammates btw over the past few years has this not been a major problem for us?? Sadly that Utica team underachieved (a key part of that Alexander HOLTZ being intimidated all over the ice unlike his countryman Fabian Zetterlund ….remember him??? Shakir was a HUGE plus in a series that saw our boys not okay well and get knocked out in round 1. Now Fitz promised his family Shakur could return home for the next season (family issues) but he would start his pro career in earnest next season (btw was our 3rd of 3 first round picks 2020 and THAT is now where the problems begin. The top goalie in the draft 2020 was NOT …..NOT Nico Daws. No, that was the generational talent phenom YAROSLAV ASKAROV from SKA ST. PETERSBURG (my most hated team in the KHL). Now the two best goalies in the KHL after Andrei Vasielevski left for Tampa were Ilya Sorokin from my Red Army and from SKA Sheyestyorkin. Now Yaroslav was the future for SKA, but he told everyone …..scout to NHL GM his dream to play was in the NHL. Yaroslav has a very bad WJC on 2020 (exactly like MARKSTROM). Now the spring before that 2019 he singlehandedly (series in Europe) knocked out the best USA Developmental team, the famed JACK HUGHES team. If they asked Jake I promise you he would have told them to draft him but NOPE!!!!!! They selected a dime a dozen winger, nothing special Alexander HOLTZ. Honestly, I was distraught ..we just made the worst draft move in Devil's history. A move that we have been paying for ever since. Askarov was taken next pick by Nashville. They have had Vokoun, Pekka….now Saros who will be Askarov. ALREADY ASKAROV HAS PUT SAROS ON THE MARKET. Btw, Askarov just led his Ad intake to the Conf. finals. A bunch of clowns in 2020, I know them as fellow Devils fans said, "We have Blackie!"REALLY??? Summer of 2022 we trade for Vitek. I TRASHED MY KITCHEN ,..WE JUST TRADED FOR A GUY WHO UTICA DESTROYED AND EVERY OTHER AHL TEAM. GUESS WHAT? THE BEARS GOT RID OF VITEK AND WIN THE CUP AND ARE IN THE FINALS AGAIN. WE TRADED FOR TIMO, A GUY I NEVER WANTED. THE SHARKS DID NOT WANT ALEX HOLTZ!!!! THEY WANTED BY NAME NIKITA OKHOTYUK, SHAKIR AND MERCER OR FABIAN .THEY GIT FABIAN. SO FAST FORWARD 2024…..WE DO NOT HAVE ANY …ANY OF OUR TOP 3 DEFENSIVE MINDED DMEN, YOUNG KIDS WITH A FUTURE. LUKE, MORENO AND NEMIC ARE Different STYLE D MEN……WE ARE FUCKED AND ALL BECAUSE WE DID NOT DRAFT ASKAROV. I've said this before, but my main concern is if Markstrom can stay healthy. Splitting the season 60/40 with Allen and not overworking either guy will go a long way towards keeping both in good shape so that helps, whereas having a rookie/youngster as the backup would have made it necessary to have him play a lot more. This is where having two vets is an advantage.
This is a great sign that Fitz is working hard to make the acquisitions needed to get this team where it needs to be to compete. This trade was excellent despite what the naysayers insist on chirping. We aren't stuck in a lengthy contract situation in case either goalie craps the bed, we moved a defenseman who was a project where NJ needs veteran defense who will be that physical player that Bahl wasn't (at least not yet). Best of luck to Bahl in Calgary, I hope he turns into a top guy for them. That 1st round pick won't be missed if NJ makes the playoffs so that wasn't a real loss, either. Can't wait to see the next move Fitz makes.

Hopefully now also onto getting a good deal For Mercer too, I hear rumors from friends about VAN wanting to try for 6m with Zadorov , but reckon we should try grab at him?

There will never be another Martin Brodeur, playing 70+ games a year. Load management is the rule these days in every sport. It's a little surprising, given how great the physical training is these days. And it really drove me nuts in baseball where a pitcher can be throwing a shut-out or literally a no-hitter and the manager waddles out there and takes him out. It doesn't even matter if you have a crap bullpen. Plus: all these starting pitchers STILL get hurt. And on top of that, the same managers overuse their best bullpen pitchers, and THOSE guys get worn out.
That said, in hockey, I'm used to it. You have to have a decent backup during the grind of the season, and your number one guy still plays every playoff game.
i dont agree with a lot things you say but still respect you enough to watch all of the content you create because i know you are very very passionate about the devils and i like that. this however is one of the times that i 100% agree with you, and these people out there that think this isnt one of the best trades fitzy couldve made blow my mind. they dont see the bigger picture at all. all these assets such as the top 10 pick and 16 mill in cap space and we need a left shit dman and a bottom 6 fwd, defense is going to get a significant upgrade and the bottom 6 fwd is probably going to be gritty, thats still gonna leave us with a pretty sizeable ammount of cap space to add even more couple all of this with absolutely no need for a top 10 pick and the writing is on the wall for what fitzy is doing, and im very very happy with all of this. i hope markstroms good friend tanev makes a NJ debut this season and thats just a free agent signing, not even a trade. imagine what a difference just 1 guy like him can make? you saw it in dallas, imagine him and then some in NJ. it gives me goosebumps

Love the Video and all the recent content man, I keep saying this we are blessed as fans to have you giving us great passionate and authentic videos every week. Although Fitz fumbled the bag last year, In hindsight now getting rid of Vitek and that contract and adding Allen opposed to doing it before the deadline this team is in way better position now. It’s Also crazy to think with Calgarys retention on Markstrom and what Viteks hit against the cap is we’re paying 700k more for him and we now have a solid 1-2 punch going into this season.

The Devs have been destroying this incredibly talented young team. Harris/Blitzer had Embid for a decade and won nothing. Even using this tactic of bringing in aging stars who were a bad fit (Harden) and foring a great coach (Rivers). They are about to do this with Hughes for listening to the "win now" crowd. This is a 34 year old goalie folks. I hope I'm wrong, but the history of this GM and this ownership isn't good, and in just a year it seems that Calgary robbed us for Sharangovich. Maybe THEY know what they're doing.
Ace, you have the best channel for Devils news and content in my opinion. As a true Devils fan myself, I'm happy that we traded for Markstrom instead of Ullmark. We gave up way less and at the end of the day, Markstrom is probably the better player even at his age.
All these bandwagon fans and keyboard warriors can go kick rocks that don't think this was a good deal. We needed a goalie upgrade bottom line and Markstrom is proven for what the cost was.
Now that we got Markstrom now, what about Brady Tkachuk?

I fail to understand how fans can be upset with this move. Markstrom is a massive upgrade to our goaltending, the gain Markstrom will bring between the pipes far more than makes up for the loss of Bahl. Next years second round pick for a team in win now is nothing anyone should be worried about losing. Calgary retaining a third of Markstroms salary is icing on the cake leaving NJ with a couple extra million to play with in free agency. Past cup winners like Colorado, Vegas, St Louis, Chicago have proven that you don’t need that elite Lunqvist / Price / Luongo / type to go all the way if the other positions are built properly. If Fitz makes the other upgrades on the front and back end and adds more grit to the blue line, Markstrom will provide the team with solid enough goaltending to be a contender. Keep it going Fitz and LFGD!
The Devils now need to get some size with attitude. the league is moving back to a more physically game and we are way behind the curve.
This deal was a master class trade for Fitz. Now take the 10th and get a gritty top 6 forward who can take faceoffs before the draft and pick up the D in free agency. Gooo Devils!
Best move that could be made without losing the farm. Allen will back him up and we can see if daws or schmid are the future by the time markstroms deals over. Now Fitz just needs to trade for fwd using the 10 pick and sign tanev,Zadorov or montour in FA.

I like this deal and am feeling invigorated now that we finally have Marky. Next year’s 1st rd pick was a necessary piece for a goalie. The thing we sacrifice (and you have to sacrifice to get) is the ability to have that first at the 2025 trade deadline to shore up our line-up for a Stanley Cup run. But the other options (Ullmark/Saros) were even more costly, so this sets us up nicely for more game hunting ahead.

Good there is 2 years and exactly about them needing to hit on these goalies in the pipeline. I say that they should of fired Kowalski already because every goaltender has regressed since he joined the staff. He may of been something in St Louis but he left that something there. In house buisness and next thing I want to hear is that Mercer has been signed to term on a nice team friendly deal. I dont want to hear after we lose him from our fans that he wasnt much and the same bullshit they dumped on Bahl going out the door. I get we have to give to get but reading some of the justifications from our fan base in regards to that 23 year old was pure insanity. Such as "he regressed"….regressed from WHAT, he actually played in 1 season. Next that he was soft…um hello, he was 2nd on the team in hits and blocked shots, so everyone on that team minus 1 was softer. Ok and that closes my book on Bahl.
Lets go Devils, FITZ sign Dawson and get these other pieces we need, such as a legit Center who wins in the dot since the other non talked about thing is replacing McLeod in faceoff circle which had huge effects on how this team stumbled last year. If your spending your time chasing the puck cause you cant win in the dot, your wasting alot of time and also watching the other team score first….how many games did we chase from the onset last year? Win now mode, so build a winner Fitz and hope this group learns how to defend.
Daws and Schmid are both RFAs and could be lost this summer unless you pay them decent money bringing the cap space down. And frankly, they should be traded and Malek and Poulter should be the ones kept.
