Tampa Bay Rays vs. Geography: Why Tropicana Field is Always Empty

For the entirety of the franchise’s history, the Tampa Bay Rays have always struggled to bring fans to their games. Many people point to their stadium being an issue, but the problem lies much deeper than that.

  1. I live in Orlando and would love to go to Rays games…but my God getting through Tampa on I-4 is a headache and makes the trip twice as long as it should

  2. I’m in Tampa. I go to Bucs and bolts games every year. I haven’t been to a Rays game since the 2000s. It’s too far, it’s in a dump of a neighborhood and it’s just a crappy stadium too

  3. There’s one real answer and that’s it, it’s bc Tampa is a transplant city, the rays aren’t anyone’s first love

    Their TV ratings are phenomenal

  4. Interesting that almost the exact same thing happened in Montreal, but they didn't get excuses made for them and lost the team.

  5. As a ft. lauderdale (hollywood) resident…..we had little support for the florida panthers. Now they are everyone’s darling

  6. Need to move the team to Orlando FL , more tourists and a fan base that will pay to watch a game, and Disney would sponsor

  7. the best things about tropicana field…or whatever they call it… #1…it's 72degrees…the end

  8. BS …the reason the Ray's attendance record is poor is because the are very few real Tampa fans, most of the attendance are fans of of other teams… I know, I lived in Tampa for 16 years…there is nothing wrong with the Trop…irs better than the stink hole Wrigley in Chicago and Green Monstrosity in Boston..

  9. I can only speak for myself and friends. Many in this area are seniors on fixed incomes, it's expensive to live here…..I need to spend my money on necessities not sporting events.

  10. As someone who had relatives living in Florida, it's hard for them to go to these games. My family is from New York and they love baseball. But going to the Trop for them is a journey for them as they're not used to driving long minutes and live in Orlando. Plus the stadium isn't good. Like it's an eye sore to some. My aunt told me she prefer to just fly back to New York or hop on the brightline to go see the Marlins instead of going to the Rays game.

  11. Come on Rays… move to Ybor! The heart of Tampa with accessibility to all the surrounding TB towns via I75, I4 and I 275. The area is undervalued and on trend.

  12. A big issue that somehow gets overlooked is the amount of baseball happening around the Bay Area before and during the season. This is a major hub for spring training, so fans are getting a taste before the season starts. Then during, you’ve got really great baseball at the minor league stadiums at a fraction of the cost. So many cool minor league stadiums within 50 miles. Why would anyone go see the Rays when you can do an all you can eat at a minor league game with players that are nearly as good for a fraction of the cost?

  13. It’s 100% because the Trop sucks. You put a modern retractable roof stadium in the same location I’m going to 15+ games a season. You put a modern stadium in a better location in the Bay Area? Season tickets

  14. I agree with everything except the idea that Miami is better than St Pete in terms of traffic. Bumper to bumper gridlock with crazy drivers from 4pm to 7pm everyday and non stop construction on disconnected highways that go nowhere. Miami driving is abysmal even without traffic

  15. The Tampa Bay Rays organization sucks! When my son was 9 years old we drove from Jacksonville to a Rays game in Tampa for his birthday with his friends in tow. The Rays offered a birthday party package for kids, pizza, drinks and gear but the biggest part was the kids seeing their name on the scoreboard and congratulations by the announcer. Sadly, my son’s name was neither displayed nor announced. He was heartbroken when other kids birthdays were announced and his wasn’t. After the game we went to their business office and told ‘so sorry’ that was all, nothing to soften his disappointment. We became anti Tampa Bay Rays afterwards and ever since. They are a pathetic team and we hope the bleed money in perpetuity.

  16. Denver has just as many transplants as Florida but still has great attendance. It’s not a Florida problem it’s an infrastructure problem. Live in Miami now, loan depot has no transportation to and from. And there’s nothing around the stadium. It’s in a neighborhood. Marlins have the exact same problem as the rays

  17. I don't think its a Florida thing because other sport teams have terrific attendenace in florida such as Tampa Bay Lightnining. Miami & Tampa have different Issues. In Miami doesn't help they play terribly & nothing around the stadium & hard to get to. In Tampa, St Pete Geography is so off from a centralized location that even if they win will be hard to get enough people to come and doesn't help the stadium isn't nice.

  18. For all the information available to you to form your opinion is greatly misinformed. I have lived in the bay area for almost 50 years and can tell you there is soooo much more to their attendance. Also, Miami will never be good with attendance unless they are in the playoff. Also, Pittsburgh, with the exception of a few years recently their attendance is also lower than the Rays.
