If Marner does not want to sign an extension and we will get nothing in return, could both sides not agree to cancel his contract and he goes UFA July 1. This would give both sides what they want and we can move forward. Marner would be better off to stay on a discount to get 8 years. Lets say 8.9 m. Add in bonuses for team success. 2nd, 3rd and cup round win bonuses. He would be a hero not a guy who just wants money. JT signs a very cheap extension. Now Tre knows how much cap room he has to fill the holes and build a team.
I disagree about Marner. Tell me that GMs won't line up to take a 95pt player that they only have to pay $750. The cap hit would be an issue for many teams but that's also a PLUS for some teams.
Nothing will change with the current pay structure. They all should be paid 700k/season, and they get bonus money if they go rounds. That way there is an incentive. Otherwise you will have the same group of under performing snowflakes.
Marner being traded after july 1st makes a lot of sense. Sign and trade. His salary bonus is paid by the leafs… At this point the Leafs would get a massive haul for marner. if it's a sign and trade with a team like Utah.. You're getting 6th overall + Crouse + Durzi… Or perhaps even something like 6th overall + Logan Cooley… that's the type of return you need for someone as good as Marner.
