[Philadelphia Flyers] Roster update: The Flyers will buy out the remainder of the contract of forward Cam Atkinson, according to General Manager, Daniel Brière.
Guess they couldn’t unload it in a trade. I’m ok with it.

Saves some money in the short term. More importantly, Tortorella can no longer force him into the lineup.
RebuildFletcher
Buying him out means the team will save $3.516.666 in cap space this season, but will carry a dead cap hit of $1.758.334 this season and next. This was the right move to make.

This is equivalent to unlocking a full 12 forward lineup!
Like they literally just paid to get a 12th lineup slot after having the dedicated Cam Atkinson spot
toupis21
Should we expect to use the freed up cap for a last minute draft move?
BumblerNamedOy
Obviously would rather have traded him, but glad he’s not part of the lineup blocking younger guys anymore

Honestly, there was absolutely no shot he would’ve been able to carve out a regular lineup spot next year with how deep we are on the wing. Saves us some money to make moves this year and the dead money won’t hurt us much next yea, so I wouldn’t worry about that part either.
Seems like a great dude who just had father time catch up to him, hope he’s able to find an NHL job next year.

I think I’d pay that to not watch this guy zing them wide of the net all season again
Roll-Me-Through
Remember when he was on a hot streak at the beginning of the year and he was immediately asked how he felt about possibly being traded? And everyone’s reaction was like yo, let this man be happy for a minute instead of giving him anxiety about maybe needing to uproot his family? Well it turns out we should have traded him immediately in that moment.
DudicalAwesome
He’s a good dude with a great attitude but father time came calling and he just couldn’t contribute anymore.
Shamrock_6
Guess CBJ wouldn’t help us out.
NowFook
As expected since giving up an asset to offload him didnt make sense.
People say ride out the last year but you dont want him to take playing time from a young guy or be forced to sit him in press box most of year.
A 1.7 mil cap penalty in 2 yrs will hinder *nothing*. We still wont be in win now and will have moved on from many of our worst contracts.
Now Cam can pick out a spot where a team actually wants him and can offer regular playing time.

damn, i hate how his decline happened so fast. i remember bein pretty psyched when he first came here

Sorry to see such a good guy not finish up his run in an ideal fashion, but once Michkov was confirmed that was that. I wish him and his family the best.

Oh boy another person the Flyers are paying to not wear the jersey

So what are the pros and cons of doing this with Johansen and Cal Peterson. Seems like we are still a couple years away from needing space for a too free agent.
weirdbookcase
Ok so putting a one way player in the minors sheds 1m off the cap so technically shedding 2.5m and 3.5m the following year is a good choice from that persective but I’m still not sold

Lived in Cincy for a while and used to watch him while on CBJ. Nice guy to watch. Like when the little guys can play. Good luck to Cam.
Streetkillz13
I feel bad for cam, he was such a good player in his early career, could have been the perfect linemate for G the timing just did not match up.
AngledLuffa
We’re probably not spending to the cap next year, and the roster spot is important. Not a big deal either way but probably had too many roster spots tied up with unplayable veterans already
Blinsin
Sucks cuz he seems like a good dude. But absolutely makes sense.
bcarey34
This tells me Someone else is getting moved and they need that cap space (Atkinson buy out + player who is moved ) to acquire someone with a sizable salary. There is no other reason to do this vs burying him in AHL for the last year. That’s my initial reaction.
Neilpuck
Not a fan creating even more dead cap with this move but we’ll see.
