Oilers Trade McLeod, Tullio to Sabres for Savoie, 14 Players Elect for Salary Arbitration

welcome back all right so some more news of the day for all you find people we have a trade to talk about we have a sign extension to talk about from Buffalo uh and of course the trade involves Buffalo as well and then we have 14 players electing arbitration two of them Buffalo Sabers so Buffalo is going to come up a lot but I’m wearing Columbus cuz there’s three Columbus Blue Jackets filing for arbitration now the way that arbitration works is that the player and the general manager both have a number they argue in front of the arbitrator um the player basically has to argue why the team’s being cheap and the team has to argue why the player isn’t worth what they’re asking and this is all publicly in front of each other it can it can get ugly uh you look at Jacob trouba going to the Rangers from Winnipeg it started with an arbitration hearing you look at pkub Ban’s time ending in Montreal it started with an arbitration hearing at least that’s how it looked at the time uh and so yeah arbitration if it doesn’t go well it it can get kind of ugly kind of quickly so uh that being said let’s start at the top of the board uh Yoki Haru has signed an extension with Buffalo for $3.1 million for one year uh and what people are talking about and I’ve seen like online people are all all saying oh this is a clear wind for the Oilers it could be but Matt seavoy there’s a division on what Matt seo’s ceiling is going to be whether he’s going to end up being a top six forward that produces really well in the NHL or is he too small for the national hockey league is the question that gets asked Now Matt seavoy was a number nine pick for Buffalo back in 2022 and I think that sways people’s opinions as well seeing that he was a high draft pick in Rochester last year he played six games two goals three assists Five Points at the the the NHL level he plays one game for Buffalo uh the rest of the season he played in the WHL he’s 20 years of age we’ll see this year uh what he’s able to do but in Edmonton uh the pressure is going to come off Soo at least a little bit I understand that for Buffalo I do Buffalo’s got a lot of good young forwards adding Ryan McLoud uh who’s already NHL level and he may get more ice time in Buffalo they’re likely looking at his points per 60 Minutes in Edmonton and thinking uh if he gets an expanded role with another team maybe he scores more in 81 games McLoud had 12 goals 18 assists 30 points and then he added four goals in 24 games in that Stanley Cup playoff Run for the Edmonton Oilers now mccloud’s hands have not been fantastic at the NHL level I get that the 12 goals being highlighted but he may play more in Buffalo his scoring may come up uh they also pick up Tyler Tulio a 126th overall draft pack draft pick back in 2020 uh in Baker field this year the Oilers farm club of course 54 games nine goals 12 assists 21 points one thing that has been brought up is that the players that Buffalo is adding in the offseason very fast they’re looking for a faster team and so for Buffalo uh that that’s something that was notable last season they had trouble with their attack and their transition game The Players they’re picking up should help with that transition game we’ll see if it makes them a better team overall but yeah the transition and being able to make those quick plays out of your own Zone and and take advantage of the other team uh maybe napping a little bit or catching a team on a line change is vastly more important in the NHL now than I think it’s ever been so I understand what Buffalo is doing I also understand why Oilers uh fans and many others are saying the Oilers win this trade easily and this is just what a terrible move by Buffalo I’m wearing Columbus in part because I’m just staying out of it I’m just staying out of it um it does mean I should do a video on Buffalo soon but this is also why uh I’m not declaring winners and losers in the offseason because it’s not done yet offseason’s not done yet this does free up some cap space for the Oilers we’ll see if they do anything else with that cap space that they freed up so the 14 players who have elected salary arbitration are as follows these are not players that are greedy and want a ton of money uh it can just be a matter of the team and the player not agreeing on the on the money overall and so going to arbitration means that that just makes it all go away Jake Christensen for Columbus uh Connor derer of Toronto uh Jack Drury of Carolina uh Ty emberson of Santa Jose jet Greaves goenda something failed there you want lingren signed I think you want like at least a four-year deal with lingren and now it’s going to arbitration although keep in mind 14 players are electing for arbitration this signals that now for GMS they’re going to want to get the deals done so don’t rule out lingren signing an extension before you go to arbitration you don’t want the ugliness of that and if obviously if these players sign agreements between now and the arbitration date well then they don’t have to worry about arbitration uh uko peka Lucan of Buffalo is going to arbitration as well Beck malinin recently acquired by Buffalo uh Carill marchenko of Columbus uh JJ moer now of the Tampa Bay Lightning traded out of Utah of course Marty NES so if you’re a canes fan the good news is that going to arbitration means you can no longer get an offer sheet so NES now takes them to arbitration they either sit down and they hash this out maybe they trade him and another team ends up signing him whatever happens uh NES has made sure that that clock will run relatively quickly over the summer and we’ll get this settled out uh Spencer Stasney in Nashville uh Joe valeno for Detroit and Oliver walstrom of the New York Islanders a player that I’ve liked over the years but yeah it’s really fallen off for walstrom I don’t know if he’s going to end up staying with the Islanders but we’ll see and again going to arbitration uh that process can be it can end up getting kind of ugly but we’ll see how things go for these players again I would expect let’s see 14 have have gone to arbitration I’ll say two I’ll say we end up with two actual arbitration hearings towards the end of July early August and all the rest I think probably get settled but we’ll see let me know your thoughts in the comments section below as always don’t forget to hit like And subscribe in the event that you’ve not done so already thank you guys so much for all your support I will talk to you again soon

  1. Biffalo kept the better (+younger) of the two ex-Winnipeg Ice prospects (Benson). They don't need both.
McLeod is at least an NHL player

  2. Edmonton got the better deal eh? Time will tell. While Savoie is a good young talent and hate to see him go before we know what he's capable of, Buffalo needs to win yesterday already. Savoie is heading to Bakersfield where he likely going to need at least a season or two before he can crack the Oilers lineup.

  3. If I’m a Sabers fan, I’m very much questioning everything right now. That’s not a better team than last year and just gave up a really well thought of young piece for a bottom six player…

  4. Thank you for seeing the trade as Buffalo sees it. He is lower in the prospect pool than other high end pieces like Kulich, Ostlund, and Helenius. McLeod is there new 3c which was a need. Analytics are good with him too.

  5. I feel like a prospect like Savoie should get more than a low prospect and a third liner. That doesn’t mean it is win for Edmonton as if this guy doesn’t pan out well then it’s bad deal. But the Oilers are also getting rid of 2.1M to re-sign hopefully Drai and Bouch

  6. Big pill to swallow when a prospect is sold as the next big thing to his fanbase and you find out some day that he got traded for a bag of pucks and a cold already bitten into sandwich.

Sorry sabres fans, but he’s probably not the last.

  7. Sabres develop another decent goaltender and don’t want to pay him as usual. Unreal. Sabres are the NHL’s farm team.

  8. Good move for the Oilers who still need to make a move or two to get under the cap.

  9. As a completely impartial fan the trade is a little odd but the Sabres dont really need more super skilled prospects at this point, they gotta get the right proven depth pieces around their stars. McLeod could be a suprise in Buffalo, i really started noticing him 2 years ago in the WCFs

  10. That’s easily the worst NHL trade in years. A forward with top 6 potential (and team’s best prospect) for a 3rd line center. Oof.

  11. This is probably win/win. On Edmonton, MacLeod was a third line center and he was replaced with the resigning of Adam Henrique. In return Edmonton get a needed good prospect in while shedding salary cap to help get back under. Buffalo gets a big, fast proven NHLer that could help the team now.

  12. Buffalo has enough smallish players stockpiled in their pipeline. Savoie hasn't shown anything in the 2 years since he was drafted. That said, playing hardball with UPL is a bigger concern, imo.

  13. As an Oilers fan, McLeod was annoying because his skating and size is sooo tantalizing. He never does anything with his size though. It’s all height, not strength. He tried hitting for a small period of time, but he just bounces off of guys. His hands are sometimes fantastic, but usually leave you wanting. At least once per game, I think it’s Mcdavid rushing up the ice only for it to be McLeod. Solid 3C on a non-contender, better on the wing.

  14. I feel like savoie for askarov would’ve made sense for both teams and likely could’ve been 1 for 1 idk what the sabres were thinking

  15. Isn't officially the Oiler GM, doesn't wanna be the Oilers GM, but holy macro he's showing he's the best "GM" we've ever had.

  16. Oilers should trade Evan Bouchard while everybody thinks he's still good. For anybody that doesn't give the puck away five times a game…

  17. Oilers seem to building a team like the Panthers were a few years ago, loads of skill and scoring, not much grit or defense. It didn't work back then, not sure if it will work now, especially in the West.

  18. Maybe I'm in the minority but I like this for the Sabres. They get a fast, solid, and versatile NHL center for a junior player who projects to be am undersized winger in the NHL and those players have low value in todays NHL.

  19. Can we start treating the sabres like a special education child and prevent the other teams from taking advantage of them? This is just sad.
