One big question for 3 extension eligible stars

There are some big names entering the final year of the contracts in the NHL, with Mitch Marner, Leon Draisaitl and Sidney Crosby all eligible for extensions. TSN Hockey analyst Frankie Corrado examines one big question each star will be looking at when negotiating their next deal.

  1. wow. were you ever right about crosby. as a fellow martimer, we don't make work for ourselves. we have enough to work on. and yes, mario has convinced sid that being a franchise player makes you a hero to the community. sid will never have to pay for cabs, hotels, restaurants in pittsburgh, plus it's close to here on the east coast of canada.

  2. Would you trade Marner for Crosby? Dubis loves his boy Marner and Crosby can show the team what it takes to win in the playoffs. Who says no?

  3. Crosby shouldn't sign with the Pens. 87 should get traded at the deadline for a ransom. For example, 87 (50% retained) to Edmonton for Philip Broberg, Dylan Holloway, and Sam O'Reilly or a 1st. Maybe 87 for a Ryan Nugent Hopkins package. 87 and 97 win the Cup and bring it back to Canada. 87 restocks the Pens with youth and could return as a UFA. 87 should repeatedly sign 1 year deals with the Pens and get traded for the Cup at the deadline if the Pens aren't in. That would fix the Pens roster and give Sid the best Cup chances.

  4. Hope Marner leaves (im a leaf fan) glad Oilers gonna overpay for Draisaitl, hope dubas screws up the pens rebuild.

  5. Draisaitl's agent has said in an interview a few things that are notable:

-Either he signs an extension by end of August or there's no deal
-Leon is at least 30% underpaid for the last few years
-He's very confident the Oilers can get him signed

So to me, it looks like he's a lock for the Oilers as long as they're willing to pony up.

  6. Sidney Crosby is 37 years old. He has maybe three years left. He doesn't owe Pittsburgh anything. The Pittsburgh trophy case is packed. He won three Stanley Cups in the cap era.

Whatever Sid wants to do, no one will ever hold it against him. He could play with Nathan, Connor, or other Connor. He could say, "Who has the best goalie and defensemen? I'm going there." He could go for money. He could give a sweetheart deal to a team. His three years. His choice.

  7. Leafs should let Marner walk. Marner will want more than Nylander but he is not nearly as good as Nylander. Salary structure just doesn't work. Marner scored 26 goals. He is not worth 11 million. He is a 6 million dollar player. Tops. The reason why he even gets the assists that he does is because Mathews is usually on the end of his passes. The playoffs are a whole different animal and Marner is unable to play tough. That's why he is not effective in the playoffs. 11 million can get us 2 excellent players or 3 good players. Time to balance the team a little better. The only way I would consider keeping Marner and Tavares is if they take a 50% pay cut or better otherwise I wouldn't even consider keeping them. Let them walk when the contract is done.
