Buffalo Sabres Off-Season Trades and Signings

Buffalo Sabres Off-Season Trades and Signings

the Buffalo Sabers have definitely revamped this off season but have their signings and trades made them a better team find out my thoughts coming [Applause] [Music] up what’s up everybody and welcome back to another video of Sports Talk Buffalo we have are now several weeks past the NHL draft and a full week into free agency and the Sabres have made multiple signings and multiple trades but are they a better team let’s first start with the free agent signings the first being the most expensive signing and that is of course veteran right- Winger I’m sorry left Winger Jason zooker now zooker signed with the Buffalo Sabers for one year at $5 million of course they needed another scoring Winger after the Sabres have decided to part ways with Jeff Skinner buying out the remainder three years of his contract so they settled on zooker now zooker is coming off of a uh 32-point season which saw him score 14 goals and 18 assists however he is a six time 20 goal scorer in his career and he has just one season moved from 27 goals uh on the season so it is clear that Buffalo believes that he can recapture his scoring touch in Buffalo whether it be a third line roll or a uh second line role with this Buffalo Sabers team he is a decent middle six guy he can kind of go in between the second and third lines up and down the lineup a little bit he will provide you with some scoring depth over overall not a terrible signing even though the Buffalo Sabers definitely definitely overpaid to bring him in here to Buffalo Buffalo also signed multiple fourth line guys to go with the re recent acquisition of Ben milstein first being 29-year-old Center Sam lafy now lafy is coming off of a strong season in Vancouver in his 79 games that saw him score 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points he was also a wrecking ball for the Vancouver Canucks as he amassed 191 hits in those games while averaging just 12 minutes per game he is a quality fourth line Edition for this Buffalo Sabers team he brings speed he brings physicality he absolutely brings Wings a little bit of scoring touch something that it appears this Buffalo Sabers team is trying to go into the direction of as that third and fourth line has been lacking in physicality and speed for several years now as we talk about the the Malin trade and the signing of Sam lafy I believe it is pretty clear the the sabes wanted to be a lot more physical and get tough to play against in their bottom six as I just mentioned as they also added Nicholas Al kubel if I said that wrong I apologize a physical fourth line right winger who had 159 hits in just 60 games he also has a little bit of offense in him as he chipped in 16 points which was six goals and 10 assists it is very very clear to me that this Buffalo Sabers organization wanted to go in a seemingly a completely different direction they wanted to add a ton of speed they wanted to add a lot more physicality this Buffalo Sabers team wants to go up and down the ice very very quickly and in the last couple Seasons as I mentioned the bottom six of this team was very slow more of a plotting type bottom six and that is going to be completely different this season and hopefully Lindy rth can get them uh to all Buy in to what he is selling heading into the season now for the trade that caught a lot a lot of people including myself off guard as the Buffalo Sabres traded Matthew seavoy who was their highly touted Prospect he was the ninth overall pick I believe just two years ago to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for their new potential third line Center in Ryan McLoud and AHL Tyler Tulio now McLoud is just 24 years old and will be in RFA after this season he is coming off of his best offensive season overall that saw him score 30 points in 81 games that’s 12 goals and 18 assists cloud is what people call an analytic darling as his numbers say he is a very good 200 foot player and will continue to get better as he continues to progress in his career so the Buffalo Sabers uh definitely filled a very big hole as he also had a 50.8 uh Faceoff win percentage again something Buffalo struggle L with last season now of course does it suck to lose a highly touted Prospect somebody that a lot of fans including myself were really excited about somebody who they thought could potentially make a push to make this NHL roster they trade him away of course again it it does suck but Sabers fans like myself have been pounding the table for the Buffalo Sabers pounding the table for the Buffalo Sabers to make a trade to make this team better now we have a cupboard full of prospects now did the Buffalo Sabres overpay potentially they did potentially overpay however we don’t know that yet everyone is just saying that Matt seavoy is going to be a star a stud in the NHL and he very well might be this could turn out to be a horrible trade for the Buffalo Sabres however this season right now if you take a step back it makes sense for Buffalo they the Sabers wanted to get better right now the chances of seavoy breaking into the uh NHL roster the Buffalo Sabres NHL roster this season was probably slim to none uh everything that is being said is he is better off on the wing and the sabes don’t need more Wingers they needed another Center SO trading Matt seavoy for a McLoud could definitely help the Sabers depth down the middle this season right this season that’s what we’ve all been talking about we wanted the Sabers to go after it and get better this season and analytically at least McLoud is a very very very good 200 foot player he can add in some offense for you everything I’ve seen said this kid can skate Like the Wind which goes along with what I’ve been saying in that the Buffalo Sabers 100% wanted to get faster in their bottom six McLoud also was able to play and keep up with dry cdle keep up with McDavid so he is definitely somebody that can kind of move up and down the lineup if needed for this Buffalo Sabers team and again it was no guarantee that Matt seavoy was going to make this Buffalo Sabers roster I believe this signifies a shift in the philosophy of the Buffalo Sabers to a win now mentality and they are going to do just about anything that they believe makes sense in order to get this team in a position that they are going to be successful in the now we have the prospects in the cupboard and we can sustain a winning uh culture hopefully if things start to turn around for this Buffalo Sabers team and The Time Is Now to make them better we have been rebuilding for multiple off Seasons we’ve been stocking up the prospects and again the time is right now for this Buffalo Sabers team to win so again while the Sabres may have overpaid they did the fact is they did fill a big hole at 3C and with drafting costus halus it really kind of made Matt seavoy Expendable the Buffalo Sabers drafted a guy who has been playing pro hockey over I believe in Finland for several years now he is for what I have been or seen online pretty close to the NHL maybe one season of AHL he is right there uh almost uh potentially ready for the NHL we will see as this off season progresses how good this kid potentially can be I’m sure he will be given an opportunity uh especially in preseason we’ll see how he looks likely going to the AHL but again it made seavoy Expendable and the Buffalo Sabers believed that signing M or trading for McLoud would make them a better team a deeper team a faster team this season I can’t sit here and pound on the table and then get about a trade and then get mad when of course they make a trade and and regardless I won’t say regardless of what it is but kind of as long as they are feeling a need that the Buffalo Sabers uh have I can’t really get mad at it could this turn out to be catastrophic it could be but as of right now this seems like a fairly decent trade for this Buffalo Sabers team they get immediate help and they trade away one of their prospects that they have too many of essentially right now so it’s kind of a winwin for both teams maybe Matt seavoy turns into a stud playing next to Conor McDavid if he gets an opportunity to in in Edmonton only time will tell however I love the direction that this Buffalo Sabers team appears to be going in Faster more Straight Ahead a lot more physical and inyour face and tougher to play against and it will be up to Lindy Ruff to get all of these guys to buy into his system and play that style of game let me know what you guys think in the comments section below are the Buffalo Sabres better now than they were last season and do you believe that this is a playoff team I want to thank you guys all for watching Remember to like subscribe and hit that notification Bell so you guys 1. LOVE the moves Adams has made to rebuild the bottom 6 forward group. They are FAST & TOUGH now ! No more SOFT SABRES! Adams shouldve done this last summer.
Sign UPL and Malenstyn ( im confident they will avoid arbitration) and the team is ready for the season and yes they will make the playoffs next spring!

  2. I like a lot of the moves the Sabres have made in the offseason, but others were bad. you could make a case that they are still the 7th best team in the division. Even if we are in "win now mode", our roster still doesn't match up well against most other teams in the Atlantic.
    1. I like the Ruff hire
    2. The first 2 draft picks were good
    3. I like the defensively responsible, hard hitting forwards they added
    4. Zucker is a downgrade over Skinner, who we'll be paying for the next 6 years. Why buy out Skinner this year if you aren't spending to the cap only to replace him with a overpaid downgrade.
    5. The Savoie trade was atrocious. Total mismanagement of a #9 overall pick, wasted away because the team ignored bottom 6 needs for years. A desperation move. A fireable offense.
    6. The moves for the bottom 6 means what for Krebs and Greenway? Is this an admission
that it was a mistake trading for them?

  3. Playoffs and a Stanley Cup Run. Thats Why These deals were done. Fantastic, 100% Better team. Faster, win more faceoffs (last in the league last season) better PK, and this offense was amoung the top 2 seasons ago. Lindy now gives this team direction and the offense is coming back with a system that works. Looking forward to this Run ✔️

  4. UPL and arbitration. Levi will be out #1 when he's ready, UPL knows this, the organization knows this. UPL is gonna want money based on last year's (the 2nd half) performance rather that the years leading up to this point. 1st time he's got a save % over .900 👏🏻👏🏻. As much as I'd like UPL and Levi Combo in the future….. I can't help but to think this could be a Ullmark situation….. I just hope that when the numbers come out, I'm not thinking greed as in "cash in before I'm gone" mentally or ask for a long extension followed by a BIG number…. We just don't know, but we are gonna find out.. I hope it's a short deal, but give the man a raise. If wants to be part of a winner, we will find out soon. I've always backed UPL from day 1 when many did not, I continue to back, a UPL and Levi duo… Wow, I do hope.

  5. Awesome offseason so far. Sabres added 3 of the top 10 & #46 fastest burst skaters in the nhl last season. On top of those 4 + Gilbert getting around 600 total hits. McLeod was the 2nd fastest burst skater on top of being very effective on the PK & face-offs. Ruff will be deploying a very fast & aggressive bottom 6 next season.

  6. spot on take with all of it..time will tell with the Savoie deal, for sure we will win that trade this year but the years to come looks like the Oilers won..but like you said, we can more than afford to do this because we have to win now regardless

  7. I like all the moves, especially better in bottom 6, the speed OH MY GOIdness! I watched McLeod live in the AHL, he was point per game, that speed and his shot is good
