Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz signed free agents Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault after Julien Brisebois and Kelly McKrimmon let their respective franchise players walk. Great discussion! Here is a little bit of age refined hockey inspiration. As a Finnish hockey fan I will always remember Teemu Selänne as one of our best players ever but also as one of the best late career players ( +35 years ) overall. Here are his late career stats :
05-06 ( Selänne 35 years ) 40 goals and 50 assists = 90 points in 80 games
06-07 ( Selänne 36 years ) 48 goals and 46 assists = 94 points in 82 games
07-08 ( Selänne 37 years ) 12 goals and 11 assists = 23 points in 26 games
08-09 ( Selänne 38 years ) 27 goals and 27 assists = 54 points in 65 games
09-10 ( Selänne 39 years ) 27 goals and 21 assists = 48 points in 54 games
10-11 ( Selänne 40 years ) 31 goals and 49 assists = 80 points in 73 games
11-12 ( Selänne 41 years ) 26 goals and 40 assists = 66 points in 82 games
12-13 ( Selänne 42 years ) 12 goals and 12 assists = 24 points in 46 games
13-14 ( Selänne 43 years ) 9 goals and 18 assists = 27 points in 64 games.
Not too shabby especially when Selänne became a NHL Stanley Cup Champion as 36 years old. He also played in the Olympic Games as 39 years old and as 43 years old. When he was 43 he scored 4 goals and 2 assists in 6 games as a Captain for Team Finland who won the Bronze Medal. Aleksander Barkov, who unfortunately got injured in the beginning of that tournament, was 18 years old at that time. This is a classic example of older player legends inspiring young upcoming stars. It´s totally amazing to think that Selänne scored 232 goals in the NHL after being 35 years old.
