Don’t know how involved he was but spending 11 seasons with Dallas with how good they have been at drafting seems promising.

“The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has hired Mark Leach as the team’s Director of Amateur Scouting.

Leach joins the Maple Leafs following 11 seasons with the Dallas Stars Amateur Scouting staff. In Dallas, Leach worked directly with the Stars’ Director of Amateur Scouting to oversee the Club’s successful drafting efforts. Leach began his career in the NHL as an Amateur Scout with the Detroit Red Wings where he spent 20 seasons (1994 to 2013). During his time with the Red Wings, Leach helped put together the rosters that would lead the team to Stanley Cups wins in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. In addition to his NHL scouting experience, Leach spent four seasons as an NCAA assistant coach, splitting his time between Michigan Tech (1990-91 to 1992-93) and Boston College (1993-94).

As a player, Leach spent four seasons with St. Lawrence University (NCAA) from 1980-81 to 1983-84 where he recorded 69 points (15 goals, 54 assists) in 127 career NCAA games.”

Notable Dallas Stars drafted during his time. Only the people behind the scenes know his contributions.

    **2021**
    18 OA – Wyatt Johnston
    50 OA – Logan Stankoven

    **2020**
    30 OA – Mavrik Bourque

    **2019**
    18 OA – Thomas Harley

    **2017**
    3 OA – Miro Heiskanen
    26 OA – Jake Oettinger
    39 OA – Jason Robertson

    **2015**
    49 OA – Roope Hintz

They have done very well with very little in terms of draft position.

Don’t starve with the people you eat with lmao

  4. AdIll5946

    Fan fucking tastic hire.

Dallas has been the best drafting team the last few years.

Won’t pretend like I know anything about him, but looking at the scouting he’s been apart of in recent years, he’s far more experienced and comes from two great organizations. The Stars built their core from the draft, so that’s great in terms of resume. Hope he’s able to steer the Leafs in the right direction!

  6. Finally we might just have found the right person to run amateur scouting!

  7. TiredReader87

Given his track record, this is great news.

  8. DontToewsM3Bro

    Hopefully leafs start drafting again

This core has wasted enough 1st round and 2nd round picks on the first round exists and one 2nd round exist

  9. Mango2149

We don’t have any picks does it matter what he does lol

  10. RealCanadianDragon

    We’ll see how he does.

But the thing that sucks for scouts is how you won’t know how they did until after the fact.

You could spend 10 years with a team, get fired, and then 10 years after the fact we see guys you scouted become stars.

  11. Current-Own

The guy has certainly paid his dues. I don’t mind this hiring but I am a wee bit concerned about potentially losing more of our scouting staff.

  12. Somecommentator8008

One can argue he is even better than Wes Clark.

  13. __TheWaySheGoes

Good. Treliving was cooking with this hire.

  14. Good we replaced the wiener who didn’t want to be here with a guy who’s better at the job

  15. Actual_Cobbler_6334

Anyone crying over Clark leaving should be happier now, imo. Leach’s track record blows his out of the water.

  16. Anti-MoralePolice

He’s been an NHL scout since 1994, longer than I’ve been alive and probably a decent amount of folk on this sub. You don’t stay an NHL scout for 30yrs unless you know hockey. Good hire!

  17. Strangle1441

Gonna need to keep some picks around to see what he can cook up

  18. Shoelesshobos

I don’t know what his involvement was in some of Dallas’s pick’s however if he was incredibly involved than what a hire.
