Colin Blackwell Player Profile: What did the Dallas Stars get in a Radek Faksa Replacement?

On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, we do a full breakdown and profile on the newest Dallas Stars Colin Blackwell. Blackwell signed with the Stars as a free agent on a one year deal for $775,000. He is expected to be what Radek Faksa was for the Stars for a large part of his career, but at a much cheaper price tag. Joey shares Blackwell’s background as a hockey player and his journey to this point his career. Highlighting his four years at Harvard, three seasons in the AHL to eventually making a name for himself in New York playing alongside Artemi Panarin and putting up a career high 22 points. Joey compares Blackwell and Faksa in their overall style of game, advanced numbers, and certain characteristics/skillsets. Blackwell has exceeded expectations in the past and don’t be surprised if he has a big year in Dallas. Joey finishes off the episode discussing the expectations for Blackwell and where he see’s the fit for him next season along with players like Evgenii Dadanov and Sam Steel. Blackwell does have potential to be a swiss army knife for Pete DeBoer, but with a crowded room of forwards that may not be the case here.

  1. I don't think we should assume Bourque will be with Stank. Bourque could center the 4th line while Dadonov could move up to the 3rd. Ya just neva know. I think Bourque would eventually move up the chart, but I am not sold on him starting the season on the 2nd or 3rd line. I could also see Blackwell getting moved out if something pops up with another defenseman. I don't believe any of our D acquisitions are shoe-ins to make the team either. Long way to go!

  2. I can see this fourth line performing better next year. Dadonov and Steel are capable of putting up numbers. Faksa, while a good center at faceoffs, was too limited offensively. I think about Craig Smith's production in limited time and able to put up double digit goals. Would not be surprised to see Dadonov in double digits as well as the other linemates.

  3. I’d like to c this :

    Robertson Johnston Hintz
    Benn Bourque Duchene
    Marchment Seguin Stankhoven
    Dadonov Steel Blackwell

    Miro Dumba
    Harley Llubushkin
    Lindell Lundquist

Obviously I’m not guaranteeing Bourque is ready for 2C duty. But Dutch needs a play making center to stay a threat going into the playoffs and I trust stank to not just be a finisher but a pretty darn good table setter for the likes of segs and march. Dumba may not be the most obvious PIC with Miro but it’s whatever gets him on his left side. You’ve got sustainable breakout puck movement on each pair with this. Ideally lunquist would earn a look up top in training camp. But that 4th line should cook!!

  4. Really liked the Blackwell and Lind signings. I think you hit the nail on the head with Blackwell being another Steel. There were a lot of really nice looking shifts that kinda fizzled out when Faksa couldn’t keep up on the forecheck. Having an energy fourth line that can keep the other team chasing in their own end makes a big difference. You’re either taking advantage of depth players or wearing down regulars for your top players. I feel like a better skating fourth line with the added beef on the back end will pay off in the playoffs

  5. People are upset with Dumba and Lybushkin and I'm sitting here thinking that Dumba and Lybushkin makes us better at the start of this year, compared to last year at this time. Harley is better. Lybushkin is a better Hakanpaa and Dumba is a different player but still better than Suter. I seriously think without Suter, we're better. Suter was so slow. Atleast the others aren't. Dumba may have other issues but he's got something to prove and don't owe him anything. We had to stick with Suter even if he was struggling because of his senior status. Now that's gone and that's something no one is talking about. Bichel is the X-Factor that people are forgetting. If either Ilya or Matt struggle, hello Liam.
