VELENO’S CONTRACT & DETROIT’S CAP SITUATION – Winged Wheel Podcast – July 21st, 2024

It’s Joever. The Detroit Red Wings and Joe Veleno have ended the salary arbitration process and settled on a new 2 year contract to keep Joey V in Hockeytown!

Tune in as we discuss the value of the deal, whether Steve Yzerman overpaid for Veleno, and how Veleno projects out in Detroit’s future (3:20), before also discussing how a new buyout window may affect Ville Husso (but not Justin Holl), and what the remaining cap space means for Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, and Jonatan Berggren’s contracts (12:05). Also, the Quinton Byfield contract and warning signs from that (as well as Dubas’ Matthews and Marner deals) compared to Raymond & Seider’s deals as Yzerman tries to build Detroit’s long-term core to add to Dylan Larkin & Co. in creating a competitive Red Wings team again (22:15).

After that, NHL news including Kuznetsov leaving the NHL (29:00), Daniel Sprong’s contract and why he wasn’t a fit on Derek Lalonde’s Red Wings (29:45), Major League Hockey, Kuznetsov, Krug, and a giant Al the Octopus for sale (35:30) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (43:40) – enjoy!

  1. Cap space is more important than this player… 'Simply Red' similar to zadina, 'I'll keep holdin in on' Let go steve (I mean not with wallman + 2nd) but let go….

  2. A team is "cap strapped" when they need to do any of the following. Cost-cutting trades (e.i. including picks as sweetness) or buy out a player's contract (often bad contracts). Shed salary via offseason trades including picks (e.i. Fabbri) and finally when a team has less than 5/Mil left in cap space to spend at the upcoming TDL.

Veleno – Who would we replace him with if we don't re-sign him?
The cost is a bit too much and the length a bit too short. What no one is talking about is the length of the contract, as more years would mean that Velano & RW have a long-term plan for the player (the value). Is Velano a core player in future RW? My answer is No he is not this and for those reasons this was a contract (the right to his contract) we could refrain from signing.

So Raz, Mo & Burger and it already smells bad for Burger to stay long term in RW. I have already said that he will not stay long-term and his upcoming contract will lead to what he does long-term.

I'm not worried about Raz & MO contracts, they get done when they get done.

Bayout off Husso? Sounds and looks like a bad idea at this time of the year.

  3. Will Bergers get more than his qualifying offer? I see Mo & Razor taking up the rest of the Cap…

  4. 4:20 * Don't give depth players NMC or M-NTC
If Veleno were a more fleet skater his value would be like a Helm who added energy to the lower lines. Or if Joe were a Glendening type more utility. So far Veleno is adequate yet his shot selection seems like a work in progress still.

  5. Yzerman is so damn incomeptent when it comes to contracts.
Which players do you get done first? YOUR STARS! THEN you see what's left and give that to the plugs.
With the cap going up A LOT for the next few years, there is no way Seider and Raymond takes less than 10 on an 8 year deals unless they're stupid…

  6. If you ask me the problems for blashill started with zetterberg. And thats why he never stood a chance

  7. This team will be mediocre for a long time. Team is too small to work in the playoffs. We dont have the skill yet and we are maxed out in cap. Larkin is a question mark health wise, and seems to be unable to take hits without getting severely injured. Defense isnt good, center depth isnt there. How do we even proceed other than scrapping all of this and starting over again with Raymond and Seider?
