He's not wrong
Coulda, shoulda, woulda. Probably a true statement, yes. But could've been saved for when he actually passes the record. Now it just sounds like sour grapes from Ovechkin.
Ovy is right, he would have already broken the record.
He has always been an a**! Ovi is not in Gretzky class on and off the ice.
Statistically speaking he definitely would have been past 900 already but that doesn't mean he would have passed Gretzky's GPG record. Yes, Ovi scored more when he was younger so he could have got more goals sooner, but who really knows.
Eh…he'll do it with his 2 remaining season, I doubt he won't be able to stick in 30 this year and 25-30 in his last year. Lesser player like Joe Pavelski scored close to 40 goals when 38 and last season he almost had 30.
It's true what he's saying, kind of frustrating, but it is impossible Ovi is gonna break his contract to go play in the Moscow Dynamo before his contract's over.
Gretzky also lost games to lockout.š
And if Gretzky were as healthy as Ovi he would have had another 50 goals.
Heās not wrong but if Mike Bossy stayed healthy heād be chasing Bossyās record but when he breaks it heās probably only gonna have it for maybe a decade if Auston Matthews keeps his pace.
If we are bringing up missed games and missed records because of them, let's talk Mario Lemieux. Imagine if he was able to play a 1300 to1400 game career. Odds are Ovechkin would be chasing him for most goals ever with a long way to go.
It's prtty bad how Washington traded for dubios. All the teams he played for didn't like him he even ruined kings season. ovi, breaking the record, could be in jepody after bringing him in
And if Mario was healthy his entire career he would have probably been the one to break Gretzky's goals and points record.
Assists: Gretsky 1963 Ovechkin 697
People forget Gretzky was pass first score second, and it's crazy to think that he got that many goals. Ove doesn't know what a pass is lol
Ya, he missed those games, but in any of those games, he could have gotten an elbow to the head and missed tons of games cause of that. Just cause he missed them doesn't mean anything would have changed
Ya and ovi was juiced up like Russians do, also he never got his back broken from a hit from behind by Gary suter. Not to mention Gretzky is rhe greatest play maker of all time. He even says he's not a great goal scorer. He doesn't just post up on pps and blast shots lol. Ovi very 1 dimensional
He doesn't get to say that to only benefit himself. This logic could apply to an endless number of athletes in any sport. What if Mario never got Hodgkins? . . . What if Ali never lost five prime years of his boxing career? . . . What if Jordan did not take his hiatus from basketball? . . . If Gretzky was never traded from the OIlers they would have won four more cups GUARANTEED, right? You can say, "They probably would have done such and such . . . " but you cannot declare an alternate history as fact because you cannot back it up. And Gretzky also endured lockouts.
What if Gretzky said that his WHA goals should count? He's got 46. Gimme a break Ovi, he just comes off as a whiner with that type of talk. Not a good look in my opinion. If he breaks the goal record while still being a valid NHL player then he gets all the respect. If he breaks the record on a team that just keeps him going to break the record, then I have a bit less respect for him. But he's still one of the all-time greats regardless, and if he breaks it, he deserves the accolades. Cheers
Haaa i am from the generation X era and look at those younger than me ALWAYS searching for EXCUSES. Lock out …bla bla bla ….NEVER EARD MARIO LEMIEUX put the blame on is back or is cancer……. Ask Raymond Bourque š® love your work. Merci Lego
yeah and if mario hadn't missed 800 games with various health issues you would never break any record, but what if's only apply to your career apparently ? š
Send that pro putin guy back toš©š©š©š©š©š©
Loui Erickson would have smashed the record if he didn't suck
Alex shouldn't brag super mario less than 1000 games almost 700 goals injure most of the time missed 4 ,1/2 years cancer back Mario would of had more than 1000 goals better than Wayne the great one ,stop bragging your not best goal scorer 1400 games almost .
Gretzky retired at 38. What did Ovechkin have at 38 with more games per season?
OV did a lot with what he had but… you never know – he could have broken his hand, torn his ACL – missed so much more due to an accident in one of those seasons he didn't get.
Part of the game is being healthy (and there's a little luck there). What could Mario Lemieux have accomplished if he played even one full season. So missing some games due to politics (lock-downs and lock-outs)… that's the luck of the draw.
