We need to stop pretending that what a player does pre-nhl doesn’t matter salary wise. If a guy dominates junior and his draft year he is significantly helping his ability to command a future salary; it’s no different from the NBA and NFL

In a hard cap league these deals are how you win. If you make 5 of them with your core when they’re 25-29.
You don’t even need them to all hit. As long as the total is an underpay.
You look at how Vancouver has done it and you see how not to. Instead of having Petterson for 5 more years at 8-9 they will have to pay 12-13 if he has another 100 point season.
By the time Sanderson’s contract kicks in, the NHL estimates the cap to be 87,7M vs. 81,5M when Makar signed his, not to mention that Sanderson will be 30 by the time he becomes UFA, Makar will be 28. Makar took shorter term in order to cash-in on his next contract.

Contract doesn't kick in next year Uppie. Year 1 of the contract is 2024-2025. Makar taking a team friendly deal isn't a logical comparison.
Take some time to watch him. He's Slavin with much more offensive upside.
