If you're doing tough guys, you have to do Gino Odjick. He was so entertaining to watch. He had that one year where he suddenly could score – and still beat people up. I saw many nights where he tried to challenge an entire bench. It was fantastic entertainment. I don't remember him getting many "attempt to injure" penalties or cheap shooting guys from behind. It was all just fighting and over the top theatrics I think. And he survived that very rare illness. One of the more memorable Canucks among many in that early 90s period where I think for sure it would culminate in a Stanley Cup victory.

Always loved Bryan's IN YOUR FACE play. He worked hard every shift, asking for and giving no quarter to protect his stars and goalie against the NHLs toughest customers. Gone too early, possibly as a result of long term brain injury/stroke? No one seems to know cause of death. R.I.P., big guy.

When Hartford aquired him it was huge, they finally had a D like Ulf Samuelsson that could intimidate. Then Rutherford signs Rice, they try to low ball Edmonton with Petrovicky and I want to say Kron and Macguire has his infamous tampering and the Oilers get Marchment. To add salt to the wound Rutherford was still new to the GM thing and wanted to sign Glen Wesley but couldn't so traded the same draft picks to Boston but because it was a trade Hartford wasn't protected against losing high draft picks and among other things the Bruins get Sergei Samsonov. These 2 transactions are right up with the Francis trade in terms of the impact on the franchise and its eventual move.

A few years ago I was at a Sharks event where the alumni association played the PWHPA(this was shortly before the dream gap tour started). No contact game, and yet Marchment still managed to take a penalty in that game. Rest In Peace Mush.
Huge Marchment fan when he was with the Sharks. He had a bad ass hip check and played his butt off. He did have plenty of questionable hits and knee to knees. I honestly never thought he did them intentionally. I understand why people hated him but his hard play is why I loved him so much. RIP!

Wow I didn't even know he'd died honestly, but I do remember watching compilations of his hits (didn't TSN have him on the top 10 best hitters?) and each one was a case of "I bet that would be a penalty now" dirty player? yes but effective especially in the time he played? also yes had almost a fetish for injuring great goalscorers
I was always a fan of Marchment, played hard, fought, and plenty of rough hits. He reminded me of a player everyone on the opposing team hates…but everyone would love if he was on their team. RIP
Marchment was a guy who deliberately injured players, and admitted to it himself. Not really physical in any exciting way, just kinda cheap.
RIP. Seemed like a guy you would want on your team. Not a player that would get a lot of lady byng votes.
As a Sharks season ticket holder from the late 90's through 2004 Bryan Marchment was definitely one of my favorite players. I still remember his huge hit on Donald Brashear who I believe was with the Flyers at the time and was definitely one of the premier tough guys in the league at the time. RIP Bryan Marchment.

I was a Wings fan in the 90s and 00s but I held a soft spot for those early 00s Sharks teams. Marchment was absolutely one of my favorite but those teams were so good but never could put it together. They had a young Brad Stuart, mid career Teemu Selanne, Owen Nolan (criminally underrated), Marleau of course, Vinny Damphouse, Jeff Friesen, Scott Hannan, Gary Suter… They were just a fun team man. I was really upset to hear of his passing, he was one of the first of my favorite childhood players to pass. Its a prospect I'm not looking forward to.

Couldn't stand this guy when he played. He pretty much cost the Stars from winning the Cup in '98, but RIP. His son is now a Dallas Star.
I sat next to Bryan Marchment at the Sharks 25th Anniversary Dinner. He was really nice. We talked throughout the nights presentations. I’ll never forget it. It was a great night for this Sharks fan having watched him play. Broke my heart when I heard the news about his passing.

Thanks for doing this! I watched Bryan play in the OHL for the Bellville Bulls as a teenager. He was the heart of that team. Not to mention the hardest hitter for four years in the OHL voted by coaches. Back then it was a complement to be feared on the ice. He had 861 minutes sixth all time in the OHL. He had that loose cannon attitude that was accepted and valued. What made him valuable for so long 18 years he was a good solid defenseman that could also handle the tough guys around the league. If you had Marchment you had a solid 4,5,6th defenceman and you did not need to have a fourth line goon he could take that role as needed. RIP
