With NHL training camps about a month away, we begin to look ahead to the 2024-25 season. And one question everybody asks is who will win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. Last year, Connor Bedard was the runaway winner but this year there is no clear but favorite to win the award.
So, will either of the San Jose Sharks rookies bring home the Calder this year? Will Smith and this year’s first overall pick Macklin Celebrini are both strong candidates. Other players in the hunt include Cutter Gauthier of the Anaheim Ducks, Lane Hutson of the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames goalie Dustin Wolf. There are also candidates from Russia like Matvei Michkov of the Philadelphia Flyers fighting for consideration.
We break down our top candidates and predict the finalists and the ultimate winner of the Calder Memorial Trophy.

Voters won't salty because of 24 games played. They have a history of screwing this up with Russians who were a lot older. They won't vote for a Dallas player. Klingberg was better than Ekblad and they didn't care because he was on Dallas.
None of those candidates are better than stankoven right now
Solid list! I would say stankoven is easily number 1 or 2 in calder point totals though 2025. Silly to put his chances that low
Stankoven was my top candidate but it's an interesting point that voters might resent his experience. Michkov, Cutter, Smith, and Mack are my runners up, in that order.
