As an Oiler fan I was so stoked when Dubois went third and Puljujarvi fell to us, it seemed like a great fit to play alongside McDavid. It didn't quite work out that way!
When the Sabres turn to pick came up, I was screaming at them to take Sergachev or McAvoy. And then they said Nylander and I was pissed.

Lotta busts when you look back on that draft

Rubtsov, Laberge, Twarynski, Allison, Laczynski, Hart…. This draft hurts as a Flyers fan lol

Jets’ Big Decision: Laine or Puljujarvi?
In hindsight, Tkachuk.

Frame not ideal, tough luck Adam Fox

Honestly I much rather we just not have picked Sergachev at all and got spared the pain of the what if…

I like these posts as they remind us how much of an inexact science scouting and drafting can be.

This draft was probably the most exasperated Ive ever seen a group of blue collar hockey fans sitting in a lunch room
From the joy of knowing we were getting Matthew Tkachuk to “you have to be fucking kidding me…” Anyone on r/canucks claiming hindsight is an idiot. It was immediately the wrong choice.
Fuck Benning

It’s pretty crazy how Matthews was the consensus 1OA pick, and scouts still underrated his offense pretty heavily.

I really thought Pu Was going to be top shit if you will buried in London and still did well in his draft year

DeBrincat scored 50 goals and 100 points TWICE to be ranked slightly ahead of a 12 goal scorer.

Boston fucked up so badly in 2015 but sorta redeemed themselves with mcavoy

That top 10 is rough. Also, Chychrun has always looked like a 40 year old.

As a Jets fan, there was 0% they were ever going to take anyone but Laine since winning 2nd in the draft lotto.
TheDutchin
Yet another reminder that OJ was considered the best dman in the draft and it definitely would have between a reach to take McAvoy at 6 at the time despite the redraft being kind to him.
jafahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Dude… why is seeing Hronek without a beard so disturbing?
moebuttermaker
Didn’t watch the prospects much that year, but I remember figuring Tkachuk being the son of a borderline HOFer, a big guy, and scoring on a line with other top prospects meant he was likely being overrated. Now after seeing the response to the top wingers thread, the world loves him and I think he’s underrated.

Another Francis masterclass with burning 2 first rounders on Bean and Gauthier….
Bean going exactly 1 pick ahead of McAvoy
CaptainJingles
Five St. Louis kids drafted in the 1st round.
What a draft.

Remember when Jake Bean was the best thing since sliced bread? I remember multiple sources saying he was the best player outside the NHL for a little bit

Sabres picked Nylander, Pu and Asplund all ahead of “project winger” Tage Thompson

Man I remember being pretty hyped about a few of the guys we drafted but almost all of them turned out to be complete busts.
But hey, managing to snag McDonagh for the cost of Libor Hajek will never not be funny.

Tage Thompson went from looking like a make a wish kid to monstar.

Some of these names looking back now… yikes

Vancouver had a good chance of snagging Tkachuk and squandered it

I don’t like this.

As a jets fan reading the logan Stanley summery makes me really see that it was all about his hight. Dude has no defensive abilities, poor skating and hockey iq. A lot harder when you see some people drafted after him

Ignoring that our first pick ended up being a scumbag, I’m happy with Bastian and Bratt from this draft.

I remember being bummed we didnt draft Tkachuk but stoked we finally had a defensive prospect. Lol damn.

The draft strategy this year is to strictly draft an American

Fuckin’ Juolevi.

I remember with Matthews the scouts were of course right that he was good, but largely for the wrong reasons. When he came into the NHL and was immediately an elite goal scorer, it was a surprise. He was sort of billed as this playmaker, two-way center. He definitely wasn’t sold as a guy scoring 40-50-60+ goals.
