I’ve been on the Laine hype train since before he officially requested a trade. I think people are so eager to watch other people fail, but as someone who spent 3 years in Manitoba, who has a sibling who spent 2 years in Columbus, I can’t blame the guy and think he just needed a change.

Nothing against those places or people who live there, outsiders who have lived there understand.

To be honest, I think a lot of people weren’t keen on Laine for different reasons, but there’s always the question of “at what price?”

Had we known he would’ve only cost Harris and brought a 2nd along with him, I think the opinion would’ve been much different

To play devil’s advocate, a big part of the discussion prior to today was also centered around the price we’d have to pay for Laine (which was expected to be way higher).

If you had a discussion a few weeks ago on here asking if you would take Laine for essentially free, I’m sure the vast majority of the answers would’ve been Yes.

I just said the same thing to my wife. What a difference a few days makes. Honestly, I got into so many conversations about Harris being our best trade chip to clear our logjam. Lots of people not happy with my stance. I also have always liked Laine. He’s not the best 200 foot player, but he’s a guy that likes the spotlight. Those types of players with that amount of talent are hard to come by.

Now to add fuel to all this, everyone is talking about how this is great and it’s only for 2 years anyways, what if he’s actually great? A top six of CC-Suzuki-Slaf-Laine-Dach-Demidov is pretty good!

    apple and oranges
A week ago it was speculations, as in, what price? what do we give in return? is he worth the trouble?

    Today is
Laine is a MTL Canadien, We didn’t have to give up any of Hutson/Reinbacher/Mailloux/Roy/Ghule/Xhekaj

    HELL FUCKING YEAH

I was the first to not really think much about Laine in terms of making efforts to get him and project a potential future with him in the lineup depending on cost and what we give up. Laine at this cost?

    Every fucking day

  7. Oh I’ve been on the Laine hype train for almost a decade.

  8. Very true, but I always wanted him. An upgrade was needed this off-season. And if it doesn’t work out it doesn’t really hurt anything longterm.

i’ve been a laine truther forever and i’m glad all my downvoted comments were worth it in the end

When Habs fans say it’s a good idea, I take it with a grain of salt.

When Hughes says it’s a good idea, I know he’s got information we don’t that influenced his decision.

Frankly speaking, his press conference makes me see what HuGo sees in him. The dude was an open book and addressed every question without beating around the bush at any point. He was in a rough place mentally and I think he really will put in the effort to turning it around. I look forward to seeing him play soon.

  11. eriverside

When the price was an unprotected 1st, or Hutson, or Demidov, then no.

The price was Harris and getting a 2nd. Hell’s ya that’s great deal.

  12. MustardTiger1337

I’ve always been pretty big on him and thought he improves the PP day one.

  13. whogivesashirtdotca

All the Demidov posts stopped dead a few hours ago, haha. It’ll be all Laine, all the time for the next couple of days.

  14. Patrick « Pure » Laine. Y’était destiné à devenir un Habs!

  15. GreatWhiteNorth4

While some people were genuinely against Laine the player, I’d say most of the people saying no to him were mainly doing it due to the perceived price. No average fan thought he’d ever be this cheap (from an assets given up perspective) largely because most people expected retention which would’ve driven the price way up.

It’s all about nuance on these trade discussions. It’s never really black and white unless the player did something absolutely heinous or has zero upside lol.

Now seeing what little we gave up, people are rightfully excited. 8.7 AAV is a lot but it’s only 2 years so if it goes poorly it won’t be an absolute anchor for years to come, but if it goes well? Holy shit it’s a steal. I think if there’s any environment he can strive in, it’s ours. And by that I mean the supporting cast and staff (namely Marty). I do worry about the media and potentially the fanbase though

  16. Benozkleenex

I was In for Laine and willing to offer more.

  17. LMAO. I’m going to have to file this under “funny because it’s true”.

That said… here’s hoping he pots 40 this year!!
