Devils and Canadiens were the other top candidates to receive Askarov but ultimately lose the bidding war

Askarov likely would have been a great piece for us, but ultimately the Sharks gave up pretty significant value. Swing and a miss, but that’s the market. We’ll need to continue to look for a longer term solution.

Would have been cool, but not too bummed. At least we’ll be good in net for two more years, hopefully.

If Fitz lost the bid he wasn’t offering much, because the pieces SJ gave up werent really that much for what Askarov has the potential to be.

Would he have been a great option for our future? Yep. But also with his temper tantrum to report to the AHL it could have totally blown up in our faces if he didn’t live up to the hype and needed some more seasoning. He’s only played 3 NHL games and we’re all too familiar with great goalie prospects shitting the bed over here.

Cost would have been too high to go in on a “maybe.”

Timing just wasn’t right. That simple. Sure it would’ve been nice to land Askarov. Good chance if we were offering a 2026 first and a prospect like Casey that may not have been appealing to Nashville as they’re in win now mode with signing Stamkos and Marchessault. However our pipeline isn’t too shabby with Daws, Poulter, Brennan and Yegorov. Not to mention a solid tandem for the next two years with Markstrom and Allen. Let’s see if another established goalie presents themselves by then whether in a trade or FA. There’s always the possibility Askarov turns into a pumpkin as well.

The fact that they got a first from basically the worst team in the league is huge. They’re basically guaranteed a top 10 pick unless Askarov can put the team on his back and carry them.

I would have loved to see him come to NJ. He could have made a nice tandem with Markstrom for a year or two than took over.

But hopefully Markstrom stays healthy and gives us a few good years to find our next Marty

If we’re looking at something close to what San Jose offered, the Devils would have had to put up a first and a prospect worth as much or more than Edstrom. The only ones I think are clearly at or above his level (different teams may value prospects differently) would be Casey, Silayev (definitely not happening), or Gritsyuk. Otherwise it’s a mid prospect plus a second or third rounder.

I wouldn’t say it’s too absurd of a cost, but maybe not what the Devils need right now.

No, this is awful news, I don’t want to hear the whining from folks here if Markstron doesn’t pan out. We could’ve just kept that info to never be spoken out loud.
