Nashville Predators GM Barry Trotz has traded young goaltender Yaroslav Askarov to the San Jose Sharks. This move comes after news broke earlier this week that Askarov had requested a trade and said he would don’t report to AHL training camp with the Milwaukee Admirals. As a Preds fan, I don’t think it was enough…. Yet. It might turn into a gem, but Askarov’s immaturity forced Trotz’s hand.
I think the return was good–possibility it could be great. I wanted the Vegas San Jose 1st rounder—Edstrom and Chrona I like as players–really excited about Edstrom and the great center depth that we have in the organization. Chrona is a big goalie that Korn can work with—so we've still got a young guy in the pipeline. 1st rounder is huge—with #3 in 2025 that opens up a ton of possibilities both in that draft or at the deadline.

As a Sharks fan I absolutely love this trade…I feel like we won this trade because Askarov will likely be the top 10 goalie he is projected to be because he's already shown it at every level he's played at watching him throughout his young career and even back before the draft, and it gives us our ELITE goalie of the future. On the other hand, you guys will like Chrona…watching him throughout his time he's a very big goalie who's steady, cool, calm, and collected in the net, and Edstrom will be a solid 3rd or 4th line 2 way center for the future as well.
Well Askarov wanted a path, by god he got one. Terrible….

This looks like a good trade both ways… very excited about this, but doesn’t feel like a steal by any means or an overpayment. It’s a you have to give something to get something on both sides.
If I’m Nashville, I’m ecstatic with the return. Happy he’s going to a dumpster fire and extremely unlikely he’ll see a cup final in a decade!

It depends on where the Vegas draft pick lands. If Vegas misses the playoffs, then the Preds win the trade. If pick lands in the 20-30 range, Sharks win. Edstrom does not really move the needle. He projects as a gritty 3rd or 4th liner with some decent skill. Certainly useful but you can find guys like that anywhere. Chrona can make a spot start here and there in an emergency but you don't want him on your NHL roster for an entire season. He belongs in the AHL.
Edstrom was Vegas' 2023 1st round pick. Chrona definitely would benefit from more time in the AHL. The Barracuda were dead last in the Pacific Division. Makiniemi, Chrona and Romanov split goaltending duties and were loaned to the ECHL team to get ice time.
Askarov is gonna regret this
Chrona was inconsistent on a historically bad team but has had a few highlight saves in his short career, in case anyone wasn't aware!
