Kris Letang at 62nd overall turning into a near 20 year franchise defenseman.
Honorable mentions to Jake Guentzel and Mark Recchi (4th round).
Lots of people will sleep on Recchi because he played for us almost 35 years ago and then left (before returning as an old man), but a 4th round pick immediately putting up 113 pts plus 34 pts in the playoffs to help lead us to our first cup while having a career of over 1600 games and 1500 points has to be considered.

Lemieux at 1/1. My reason is, you have to consider the quality and quantity of the tank job done by EJ (even if he won’t admit it) the previous season. He single handedly stole Lemieux from New Jersey.
And of course, there wouldn’t be penguins hockey as we know it if the Pens draft Kirk Mueller or Edzo.
Best pick and biggest steal.

It has to be Letang in the third round. Guentzel is a close second.

For everyone saying Jagr, he told teams he’s not playing for them. He wanted to go to the penguins and play with Lemieux. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a steal. For a steal of a player, Letang.

The answer is Mark Recchi. The man is the 15th leading scorer in NHL history as a 4th round pick.
Honorable mention to Shawn McEachern. 256/579 points out of a 6th round pick is impressive.

To be honest it has to be Jagr. He was easily the best player in that draft and told other teams he wouldn’t come to North America for a couple years. But he told Craig Patrick that he would come to Pittsburgh because Mario Lemieux was his idol

Recchi in the 4th, or Guentzel/Letang in the 3rd. Don’t sleep on Murray in the 3rd, short career but obvious value.
dave6687
Koltsov over Simon is criminal. He peaked at 29 points on terrible teams, Simon only had 28 playing with Crosby.

This grid is already making me disappointed in this whole sub. so, there’s that.

I think people are just upvoting the first thing they read. A proper poll at the end of this might be a good idea.

Could Crosby at 1:1 still be considered a steal with what he has turned out to be?

Malkin.
You can not call #1 overall picks a steal. They literally couldn’t go any higher. Letang gets honorable mention

Another for the Letang bandwagon.

Letang. Absolutely Letang followed by Guentzel. If Recchi wasn’t traded and played most of his career here then I would say him, but he only spent 2.5 seasons with us at the beginning of his career
