The New Jersey Devils still have not signed their Restricted Free Agent Dawson Mercer.
NJ Devils players will report to Training Camp one week from today on 9/18.
This is getting a bit too close for comfort.

Fitzgerald first hand signs Macdermid to a crazy money and term. And now he has no money to sign Mercer. Wow! Who would've thought!? I told you Macdermid signing will haunt the Devils when it comes to signing a significant player! Enjoy Macdermid 15 games for 1.3M!! Fitzgerald for the US President!!!
He kinda is a nice piece to the 2nd line. But it would be nice if Fitz had another move to fix that. Which is very doubtful

Id have to say with no cap issues. Mercer would easily warrant a 5 or 6 year deal around 5.2 million. Id be afraid of signing to more right now because of that off year. Otherwise id say 5.5, but definitely not less than 5.
Mercer is a fine player, but heโs not worth more than $4 mil imo. Iโm honestly not too concerned about this either way.
A bridge deal is appropriate. In the past two years he's gone as the team as gone. He was a bright spot in 22-23, he was often invisible in 23-24.

It seems we were putting a solid team together for this season and he's somewhat derailing the plan? Being spread kinda thin with our off-season moves, he kinda has us in a vulnerable position. Mercer is as important to this team as any player. For NJ to drag their feet on this is mind boggling.
$4.25 seems about right. Someone will sign him for that if he was unrestricted. Not really fair to hold him up to last years standards as there were too many injuries and play that affected the entire team.

Mercer 4.75 mill 5 years he is good but not great some people may have a problem with this but who am I a nobody so i guess it doesn't really matter. I hope someone agrees but im not holding my breath
No cap, I'd say 6.5 on an 8 year deal. The cap is a thing and we have to be able to retain Luke and Simon, so bridge is the only option. We may ultimately get priced out of keeping him long-term, but that's a good problem to have bc it would mean our young defensive studs are panning out to their fullest potential.

max term? If I knew him personally, and thought he was committed to hockey, I would def give Mercer 7 years if he would take $5.3 million/yr and no NTC. Could be a huge mistake, but could also be a huge win.

hes had 2 szns of 3rd line pts production and 1 szn of top 6 production and is coming off of a 33 pts season, a 2 year by 3mill aav is honestly the best he can hope for in my opinion

2 yrs 4.25 sounds right to me at his age/point in career, ESPECIALLY as someone that strikes me as wanting to play for only the Devs
