While I’m attempting to be optimistic and I 100% understand the reasoning behind the massive gamble, this contract could be bad right out of the gate. In particular, the advanced stats data in the article on PPG and xG/60 are concerning. Those numbers were on a loaded VGK squad.
As this article aludes to, at the end of the day, Stephenson is an investment in developing Matty and Shane to their full potential, both as a mentor and a shield from them being rushed.
And there weren’t many options available (maybe none that would come to Seattle, who knows) so they had to overpay. That’s pretty much the only way this contract makes any sense.
It might actually end up being a good investment but it will always be hard to tell since the benefits are indirect and mostly not visible in Stephenson’s stats.
