*First European Captain since Teemu was co captain with Kariya

Verbeek quote: “Radko emerged as a natural leader who encompasses all of the qualities of a captain and the respect of his teammates, our staff and his peers,” Verbeek said in a statement. “With a young group of players establishing themselves in the NHL, we felt it was necessary to have a veteran lead our team. Radko exemplifies what it means to be a professional, how to carry yourself on and off the ice and in the community, and be a mentor to our young group that will become the next leaders of the team.”

“If you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say anything at all…”

No disrespect meant to Gudas but we will look back on this as a dark time for our team. Same way I look back at Andrew Ference being captain of the Oilers and thinking “man those were some rough days”.

Nice! Loved seeing him come to the Ducks 🙂 A good stepping point for the franchise i believe.

I like this move….feels good for now.

Panthers fan jumping over to share my excitement about Gudas as your captain. Still miss the Butcher on our ice.

So many people pissed he’s captain on r/hockey lol. I don’t really care either way, if the guys in the locker room wanted it then that’s all that matters

That’s a lot of backbone behind that C

  9. orangesarenasty

I’m really excited for this tbh

Well, I guess I have to eat my hat. Didn’t think it would happen. Now stay out of the penalty box, dammit.

While I personally wish it was Cam Fowler, I don’t hate this. Excited to see what happens!

  12. Sway580

Fuck yes the butcher as the cap. I don’t see anything wrong with that!

I’m happy the team finally has a captain. Even in rebuilding years the captain role is so important… especially in rebuilding years. I’m also relieved that some of the Fowler for Captain camp can finally quiet down. If he was a serious candidate for captaincy they would have awarded it to him a while ago.

It definitely doesn’t feel as good as having Getzlaf or Niedermayer but, it’s nice to have some sort of leadership on ice again.

I wish we could’ve given the C to someone who has been a duck for longer but Fowler was basically the only one still around to fit that role. Feels a bit weird to name someone as captain who hasn’t been on the team.

But, how the locker room feels about it is infinitely more important than how I feel about it. Ducks need to find their identity again after the Getzlaf era, hopefully this is the first step to getting there.

Sooooo happy! Been calling for this.

I received like 80 downvotes a few months ago when I mentioned he is gonna be the next C…

I don’t like it. Gudas is cool and all but dude has been there a year and won’t be there much longer than he is now. The guys 34 years old. I wish it was one of our young guys. Instead they’ll have to either vacate the C in a year or 2 or give it to the young kid in a year or two either way the C is sacred we’ve had awesome Cs over the year this doesn’t feel right to me. Oh well. Let the regular season begin.

  18. Sponger004

I’m super excited for this pick! I really wanted a veteran to get it so he could lead the younger guys to their potential!

  19. LuckyRacoon01

Being a plus 14 on a bad team is pretty good last year.

I went to six games last season and Gudas played hard every moment he was on the ice. Some of those games were blowouts and it was clear that Terry, Fowler, etc. had zoned out and given up. And there was Gudas just fucking gunning it hard the whole damn time.

Great choice. Happy he’s found a home, hopefully for a good long while to come.

  21. _5GOLDBLOODED2_

I’m not opposed to this whatsoever.
But, this may be one of the quickest captaincy turn arounds, would it not?

He’s currently 34 and is on under contract for 2 more years I believe.

Would it almost diminish how special wearing the ‘C’ is a bit if we have 2 new ones in a 3 to 4 year span?

With all that said, love watching this Radko. He doesn’t give a shit who he has to run through or their star status.

  22. MissyMurders

I have no feelings about him being picked one way or the other. Whether he was a named captain or not he was going to be a leader on the team. But I am glad they finally named someone so we can put that conversation to bed.

Now the question is how long his extension will be and which of the younger guys will still be here and develop leadership qualities to take over down the line. But that’s something they’ve given themselves a little time to work out now.
