[The Athletic] The Canucks “preferred path forward” is to carry three goalies

It used to be teams avoided carrying three goalies at all cost since there’s only two nets. But with the emphasis on rest for goalies, this appears to be changing. Red Wings, Sabres, Leafs, and Hurricanes all did it last season. The Canucks did it in the playoffs.

I don’t really get it. Once demko returns why not send silovs down? He’s waivers exempt and they can recall him at anytime if needed.

You take a look at depth charts around the NHL and it’s clear there are other teams that appear to be planning to carry three goalies.

Buffalo: Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, James Reimer, Devon Levi

Carolina: Pyotr Kochetkov, Frederik Andersen, Spencer Martin

Detroit: Cam Talbot, Ville Husso, Alex Lyon

Los Angeles: Darcy Kuemper, David Rittich, Pheonix Copley

San Jose: Yaroslav Askarov, Mackenzie Blackwood, Vitek Vanecek

Toronto: Joseph Woll, Anthony Stolarz, Matt Murray

Winnipeg: Connor Hellebuyck, Kaapo Kahkonen, Eric Comrie

If Vancouver did carry 3 goalies, I imagine it would be Demko-Lankinen-Patera.

And then you have Arty/Tolopilo sharing duties in Abbotsford.

Goalies are going to be the new pitchers with stringent maximum saves per week counts or something. It’s already trending that way.

Having a goalie split like 45/25/12 over 3 goalies on every team so you have a fresh starter for playoffs

I think that’s what they’ll do, especially as the season goes on. It really all depends on how many call ups they have as the year goes on and also they’ll probably want to accrue some cap space as well. They’ll find a good balance

This could be the new normal huh? Very interesting. Goalies could now make a career as a backup no. 2 goalie.

Did the Canucks really have three goalies in the playoffs?

I *think* it was on Canucks Conversation where they were talking about this; with the league appearing to move in this direction it might be a good idea to make some sort of change to the roster limit/emergency call-up rules/etc. to make it more feasible for teams to carry 3 goalies.

Well they won’t be able to ride demko like they have in the past (which was a mistake anyways), and he’ll likely have constant “maintenance” or “rest” days for the remainder of his career. We will have to do whatever we can to save him for the playoffs.
