Jim McBride Breaks Down the High-Stakes Negotiations Between Bruins, Swayman

On the Toucher & Hardy show, Jim McBride from the Boston Globe joined to talk about the ongoing contract drama between the Boston Bruins and Jeremy Swayman. McBride explained that Swayman’s contract negotiations have become a bit tense, with Bruins president Cam Neely claiming a $64 million offer was made, while Swayman’s agent denied it. McBride shared how Swayman has always loved Boston and the team, but arbitration had left him feeling disappointed, which may have complicated the talks.

Fred Toucher pointed out that the Bruins seemed to strategically use public statements to pressure Swayman, but McBride said he believes Neely was being honest about the numbers, though he may have rounded up slightly. McBride also speculated that Swayman’s leverage likely peaked after the Bruins traded former Vezina winner Linus Ullmark, leaving Swayman as their top option. Still, McBride felt confident that the two sides would come to an agreement, especially if the Bruins get off to a good start.

They also discussed goalie coach Bob Essensa’s success with past goalies, and whether new Bruins goalie Joonas Korpisalo could bounce back after a tough year. McBride was optimistic, noting that Essensa has a track record of helping goalies thrive in Boston’s defensive system.

The conversation wrapped up with Fred thanking McBride for his insights as the Bruins season gets underway.

  1. At this point, I don’t think this is a repairable negotiation. Time to trade him. Then he can sign with his new team for less than the Bruins offered.
