DANIELSON & CO.’s CHANCES, SWAYMAN, & CENTRAL DIVISION PREVIEW – Winged Wheel Podcast – Oct. 2, 2024

Nate Danielson, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, Marco Kasper, and Carter Mazur have shown well so far in the preseason…but can they crack the Detroit Red Wings roster?

Tune in as we update you on Hockeytown’s exhibition games so far, as big squad players like Lucas Raymond, Dylan Larkin, and Patrick Kane have shown some flashes but the like of Danielson, Kasper, Lombardi, Mazur, Brandsegg-Nygard, & others are shining the most. We discuss what it would take for them to make the roster rather than go back down to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, how this compares to the Simon Edvinsson situation, what Auston Watson’s PTO might do, whether Jonatan Berggren is at risk & more (3:45). Also, thoughts on Ville Husso, Alex Lyon, and Cam Talbot, as well as updates on Chiasson and Finnie (28:30).

Next, the Jeremy Swayman saga in Boston, Cam Neely’s “64 million reasons”, and whether the Bruins goalie will go the way of Ullmark and be traded (and should Yzerman consider him?) (33:15).

After that, our Central Division preview with predictions and analysis on Connor Bedard’s Chicago Blackhawks, Thomas’ St. Louis Blues, Keller and the Utah Hockey Club, Kaprizov’s Minnesota Wild, Hellebuyck’s Winnipeg Jets, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar & the Colorado Avalanche, Miro Heiskanen’s Dallas Stars, and Steven Stamkos’ Nashville Predators (47:50).

Finally, NHL news including the bloodbath preseason thanks to Arber Xhekaj, Brady Tkachuk, Greig, Stutzle, & the rest of the Canadian teams feuding (1:10:45) before we take your questions & comments in our Overtime segment (1:15:25) – enjoy!

  1. Regarding Auston Watson PTO, beyond the usual to apply, like the guy, characteristics, etc. I think it's mostly about Stevie creating psychological levels (mind games) that clearly determine what individual players need to achieve on any given day, regardless of RW dress up A-Team or B-Team. >The lower a player's rank, the higher the motivation should be. Then we have those who have contracts over several years, Velano (or others specified) is thus a good tiebreaker to use when it comes to defining a squad of 23 players…

  2. I legitimately believe aside from what SY decides and that the fanbase is blood thirsty for playoffs; I think Detroit should try and sell as hard as they can at the deadline. Unless they care way too much about GR winning the Calder this year. Move whoever you can and do the most you can to see that Berggren can improves(if he produces well) and that your top 3 prospects start seeing NHL time. I don't think Danielson needs to be up this year but Mazur for sure considering his age and experience. The others have more time. I agree we need that grit line but it's not the previous years of Larkin being the only one throwing punches.

  3. The HC stands for House Cats and you can't convince me otherwise. They're the Utah House Cats this season.

  4. If Edvinsson played all year in Detroit, they would have made the Playoff. If Kasper had played the 34 games that Czarnik did, they would have made the Playoff. This is on Stevie. He doesn't ice his best team. And he'll do it again.

  5. OMGsh!!! Rasmussen does not, can not FIGHT! We don't have a legit fighter. Shouldn't have re-signed Fischer. I would've taken Watson over Fischer.

  6. Can someone explain buy outs? When is the best time to buy out guys like holl & copp?

  7. Keep Kasper up. Don't need a goon, just defend each other and play as a pack. Team toughness.

  8. I cheered for the leafs as a kid because my parents and family did.

When I was a teenager I realized how cringe they are and I didn’t respect them as an organization.

I chose the sens as my new team and cheered hard for them in the 06,07,08 playoffs.

Fell off of hockey for a number of years, got back into it last year. Watched the leafs for a season cause my wife and friends like them but I still have that same feeling I had as a teenager, don’t respect the organization.

I’m not sure what team to cheer for anymore, the sens seem like a logical choice but I’m just not sure.

It’s between Edmonton, Ottawa, and Detroit.

Edmonton is awesome and I cheered for them a lot in the playoffs since I wanted a Canadian team to win. Biggest downside though is I’m east coast and can’t stay up late enough to watch the games

Sens are the team I chose back when I was a teenager and I had good memories of them.

Red wings are a world class organization, and when I was even younger (before the leafs) I liked them on NHL 95 and kind of made them my team.

I’m looking for some clearly biased reasons on why I should cheer for the Wings.

Sell me on the Wings please and help me pick a team!

    Thank you
