A Familiar Refrain for the New York Islanders On Opening Night

The New York Islanders showed some reasons for optimism, but too many of the same mistakes led to a 5-4 overtime loss to the Utah Hockey Club in the season opener. We discuss the highlights and the Islanders debuts of Maxim Tsyplakov and Anthony Duclair plus the problems that caused another overtime loss for this team.

Plus we’ll preview Saturday’s game against the Dallas Stars which opens a three-game road trip for the Isles.

  1. this is a game that you needed to really have gauthier in there to counteract utah's speed i mean i think its pretty obvious especially given the speed utah has. I really think atleast for this one game its a obvious move and at some point soon you really have to look to have gauthier in there permanently instead of walstrom. Im getting FED UP with these blown leads over and over and over 10 million times.

  2. Lou Lamoriello lol. Doesn't seem to be a league for 80 year olds like him running the program anymore. Not his fault tonight, Duclair was fantastic. Horvat I like. Our future is Sorokin, right? Why did he not start tonight? Horrible loss. Same shit. Power play was like 1 for 20. Every time we went up they gave it back within 30 seconds. Not wasting my time on this team anymore

  3. Game 1 already sums up this season. Everything that was wrong last year is what's wrong this year. Cant play 60 minutes, cant hold a lead, cant kill power plays, cant win in overtime its pathetic. When will finally someone call it out that Adam Pelech sucks cant hold onto the puck, as soon as he is pressured he coughs it up he is terrible yet they keep playing him. And if anyone noticed the crowd left half way through the third period. I am sick of wasting my time watching this team nothing changes. The fans really need to start showing their displeasure and fast. Take Casey's advice from last year and don't go to the games.

  4. Went to UBS for the home opener here is what I saw….The Good: Tsyplakov, Duclair, Horvat, Barzal. The Bad: Nelson, Pageau, Lee, Mayfield, Varlamov. The Ugly: Dobson, Cizikas. Passengers: MacLean, Holmstrom, Wahlstrom, Palmieri. Bottom line….they looked exactly like the same team that wore Islanders uniforms from last November until Mid March. The ONLY bright spot…Tsyplakov will become an excellent power forward providing he plays with skilled forwards, of that I have no doubt…at all.😊

  5. Hey Gil, some things never change with Dobson. I've picked on Dobson for 3 years now, he's just not smart enough defensively… and it happens all the time….

  6. Same old Isles, same old story.. I guess Lou still thinks this team is a contender. Oh thats right we have Duclair..
Get ready to hoist Lord Stanley

  7. Josh Bailey is best they can get for opening night & a tribute video? Only Isles honor losers & mediocrity. Dobson is a defensive liability. He makes mental errors and still not strong enough in his upperbody to be a complete defenseman and Norris candidate.

  8. 'New season, same results…' One game down, another blown late third period lead, another pt. fkd away. One fool tried to tell me yesterday that shit was cleaned up under roy.
    Bad-pk gives up a goal-again. 40-.808 sv. %.
Good-new editions 11 and 7 score goals. pp and sh goals. 7 with a nice snipe on his goal-just what isles need a shooter who can bury it.
isles are gonna need all the goals they can get from 11 and 7 since they are no longer capable of playing shut down hockey (especially with 8 making mistake after mistake late) and have to score more, especially from top 2 lines.
Now off to stars, avs, and blows. Isles better start cleaning some things up before 0-3-1 is staring them in the eyes. Have faith-louzer's big acquisition 11 now on his 9th team will save the day because he played for roy over a decade ago. Notice 11 coast and fail to get back on hc ot winning goal. Could have kept 18 to see that shit. fkn buffoon of a gm thinking. Have faith-louzer thinks isles are a contender just like that fool who labelled me negative told me so yesterday. HAHA to him.

  9. Hey Gil, as always, great show and unfortunately, like we've been saying for atleast the last 2 seasons, Dobson has to go ! I don't care if he has 30 goals, he is a defensive liability ! He's out muscled, he's out skated and more importantly, he's always out of position !

  10. Went into the game excited to see the new look islanders and got nothing but the same. Poor special teams, blown leads. Looks like being a jets & islanders fan is going to be a long depressing season.

  11. How do you lose opening night on home ice. Sad start to the season. The first line looked good at least, Maxim Tsyplakov looked good, but looks to be another “I have faith in this roster” season loaded with blown leads, poor special teams, squeaking in playoffs (maybe) and an early exit. I told my friend I think this is my last season with this team AND the jets. I take it to serious and it ruins my day, week, month, season. At 55 I want to enjoy the winter but between the two clueless teams I watch, islanders and jets it never happens and this is it for me.

  12. Same old. Same old. Won’t cut it this year with every other team improved. Lousy PP and lousy PK. Coughing up a late goal with the lead. It’s going to be a very long season.

  13. Plagued by the same issues, it's early. Team defense needs to be the drill Mr. Roy, until their skates fall off.

  14. Good 🌄, Gil, how are you? 6 months later, some things haven't changed. They blew a 3rd period , and they lost in OT 5-4 to UT. However, the season is only a game old. Hopefully, they'll get better. Last 🌙 OT loss marred Anthony DuClair's debut as an Islander. I said the Islanders needed to beware of UT. The top line was very productive. Maxim Tsyplakov scored on the PP. Co heroes Tsyplakov and the Duke. 🐐 community effort for blowing the lead in the 3rd period again. The Islanders are in Dallas tomorrow. The 🌟 are a good team who seem to have their act together. HAPPY 🎂 CLAUDE LAPOINTE. Hear from later, Gil, but before I go, I got to tell you, yesterday I 👀 Game 6 of the Finals in honor of Bobby Nystrom, AKA MR. ISLANDER, and of course LET'S GO ISLANDERS.

  15. Speed kills the Islanders
Outside of the 1st line they have no speed.

From where they were 3 years ago

    Pelech is at 50%
    Pulock is at 70%
    Mayfield is at 70%
    Jpg is at 50%
    Casey is at 50%
    Anders is at 70%

Noah dobson is a tricky situation because can't see giving him a max contract

I dont know what do the islanders do trade him or play him at forward

    Simon

  17. Where was Dobson going on the 4th goal he left guy going down middle wide open cause he skated to corner where isles already had dman on player? And rookie mistake in ot getting caught up ice and stripped of puck for 3 on 1 other way

  18. Also mayfield and Reilly must of had at least 5 turnovers in game, defense was very shaky in game one hope they can clean up but there are veterans

  19. Good morning team! So Gil, the loser points have started. How many do we get this season. Is Dobson the goat of the game? Resounding YES from me! Roy will straighten out this little mishap. What used to be the loser points last season, I have to believe Roy will fix it. Great showing thought, just a break down late. The PK still seems to be the same though. If that one thing gets fixed, and soon please, this is SERIOUSLY a very good team. Contender for the cup? Maybe not yet, but it is a positive direction for the team. Everyone, have a wonderful rest of the day and weekend! See you all again soon. Until then.. Let's Go Islanders!!

  20. Spot on, as usual Gil – So freaking frustrated watching this team. They played like garbage, Pk, passing, loosing puck battles… and it's a shock that we came away with a point. A team playing their second game in franchise history, Utah, played with more passion and unity than the Islanders.

  21. glad I did not renew my season tickets, this team stinks. I will not watch another game until Lou is gone or they sell the team, I have better things to do then watch this old, slow unskilled players. We deserve a better GM then Lou

  22. This was a bit different. This time we didn't give them the chance to pull their goalie. It didn't make it to that point. Thank goodness for the Yankees because the Isles had me in some type of mood. But you'd think Roy would have drove the whole protecting late leads home by now.

  23. I was thrilled with the way Isles started the 3rd period. They seem to drop their intensity after they took lead . Utah has a pretty tough , speedy team . Disappointed but just game 1 . Thanks for your hard work Gil !

  24. Gm Gil. I was so excited to watch the game after getting home at midnight to watch the game and was rewarded by the shit show that is the NYI. I am especially angered by the play of Noah Dobson and Scott Mayfield. Its easy to blame coaching but the on ice leadership should take these two players and deliver the news they are no longer wanted if they continue to suck. Dobson especially needs to be sent down because the team has to overcome his mediocrity and mental mistakes.

  25. Throwing that game out. Utah was tested and now that that they got out of AZ they are “going to be a factor” as Radio Ray Ferarro said. Max has a nice game. You can see the touch and chemistry that Barzy, Duke and Horvath have. Goalie was not outstanding which they needed to win last night. Utah’s speed shocked the Isles. My biggest problem is the fourth line. I mean what are they doing? No Martin, I assume Clutter is done? Lee needs to do something. He is the captain after all. I think they will be better…the question is how much better has everyone else gotten? This is a tough road trip coming up. Dallas, Colorado and St. Louis. Wow.
