Welcome to the NHL kid…

Matvei Michkov, the Philadelphia Flyers star rookie has impressed early! Before the NHL season even started, we saw him with balls of steel attempting a Michigan in front of Tortorella before an ambitious between the leg attempt in game 1 as clearly, the kid is comfortable at the NHL level. He went on to score his first against the Edmonton Oilers displaying his tenacity getting not just his 1st, but his 2nd in the same game off a one timer. Even if early, he is currently a point per game player and clearly will be a threat in this league for a very long time. However, there will be lessons along the way and one of those came in their recent matchup in against the Seattle Kraken. 4 minutes into the period, Michkov in the Kraken end would take a pretty nasty looking hit along the boards from Brandon Montour and stayed down a bit. A welcome to the NHL moment or just a dirty missed boarding call? I cover that and much more in todays NHL hockey video!

  1. The kid has some rat in him for sure. Clean hit.
If you want to go into the boards face first and put your safety in the hands of the opposition you will get hurt.

  2. I see a LOT of pink hats in the comments who you can tell have 0 hockey IQ and have only been watching hockey for a year or only a few years. That was 100% boarding. Players turn all the time. There was still space and Montour was definitely not committing to the hit. He was still skating at Michkov. Y'all are idiots. If any Bruins player did this y'all would he crying.

  3. This man is an animal. He looks relentless, ruthless, and yes that tenacity. Hungry kid he looks great in that sweater. He really fits the mold of the flyers. Sure Danny wishes he had swagger physically like that.

That is a game.misconduct right their. But this is totally MM fault. If you turn your back and put yourself in a vulnerable position you will pay the price. So no penalty. This flyers team just needs to trade for binnington and they are ready for a cup run.

  4. Definitely boarding. Why? Because he used his arms and shoved him. Had he not done that, it would be different.

  5. That was a legal hockey head into the boards hit from behind. Unless a vertebrae is severed, it is not a penalty

  6. Don't care for either team. But the boarding rules are there for a reason: too many spinal injuries. I understand some contact in that position, but the shove at the last second was pretty obvious. Should the kid protect himself more? Sure, because not every player is going to respect your vertebrae.

  7. Have to disagree with your take on the Montour hit. Yes, he had committed to the hit and his body had that forward, move to impact momentum; however, his decision to finish the hit with his arms is what makes him guilty of a boarding penalty here. Michkov was clearly in a vulnerable position and Montour's decision to follow through with a full check risked injury in this case. I like Montour but this could have had tragic consequences. Just sayin'…

  8. Clean hit. I’m from Toronto and I’ve played at a high level and have been watching hockey for over 35 years. It’s a lesson for the kid to not do that in that area of the ice. Nothing bad about that hit. Montour should have come back home to Toronto.

  9. As a fan of neither of these teams, I can see this going either way, I wouldnt be mad at a no call but I do lean a bit towards giving the call just because of the follow through. Yea at speed its hard to stop but these are pros and there wasnt even an attempt to slow down through it. Either way since the kid didnt get hurt and got up continuing the shift I say a good “welcome to the NHL” moment.

  10. Every rookie gets their "welcome to the league kid" smack.
But on the other hand a penalty is a penalty and the NHL is known to protect their stars, or soon-to-be, stars. It was an obvious board call that wasn't called. You don't call it because it's Michkov?
When Gretzky came into the league you even so looked at him sideways you're going to the box.
A penalty is a penalty and that was a board.
    Michkov or not.
I guess Nick Deslauriers is gonna have to reciprocate any cheap shots on Michkov.
    That's the NHL, kids.

  11. I notice Michkov out there on the ice every shift. I think in 3 or 4 years, he will be one of the best players in the league. Hot take

  12. Hit wasnt from behind. Young players have a problem with turning their back for hits. But montour didnt hit him from behind.

  13. Since some of you seem to think rookies numbers were hit, wwatch it again, and then again till you realize, we can see rookies numbers in the film. Rookie shouldve hugged the boards.
Glad he wasnt hurt. I hate it when ANY player gets hurt.

  14. He’s already tougher than Crosby. My first exposure to Sid was when he dove on Forsberg shoved him than hid behind the refs. I’ve never respected him a player since. This kid is going to lead my Flyers to a new era.

  15. I can read almost ALL of Michkov's #'s on his back, as well as his name. Not a hit from behind. You don't get to turn into a hit and not get hit.

  16. Ha. No. That’s a shove into the boards at any level and no attempt to play the puck. 2 minutes

  17. Yeah, especially with a team like Seattle, where physicality is a part of the plan since no one is an elite scorer, you cant just open yourself up like that. Good no call and glad no one was serioudly injured
