Leafs do a better job screening their own goalies than opponents' goalies.
it's gonna be so sweet when the leafs win the cup in 2027 and tavares is sitting on his couch, having missed the playoffs once more with the buffalo sabres.

We have everything to be proud of tonight with their level of play in a full 60 minutes. They played hard and got goalied. This is a different leafs team folks! Nylander dug and back checked. Nuf said.

This loss, which wasn’t as bad as the final score made it seem, was no big deal. Probably a good yardstick to measure the team by. The best goalie in hockey did a number on them, and they got flustered. Time to check in with that, re-boot themselves and go forward re-energized.
As you pointed out, the first NYR goal was greatly assisted by the referee being out of position and blocking a good clearing attempt, and the team was playing well. But the more Igor denied them, the more they tried too hard, and screwed up.
Good to get that out of the way, early. It won’t happen again under Berube.

If they're playing the same way they did under the last coach, which is to say they refuse to get out in front and take a goalie's eyes away, they're never gonna win anything as a group. It's almost like the team needs more than a fancy new coach to consistently beat top teams. It's almost like they need a new identity on the roster as a whole, something the previous GM was gonna try and do but got fired before he could do by a guy above him that lacks the heart in the front office that he had as a player and a head of Player Safety. We'll see if Berube gets them to start playing like they should, but this is exactly what I figured would happen with virtually the same roster as last year.
You are right the Leafs should and could win at home for a place in the playoffs and for the fans also. Steve, you have a talent for entertainment. You have to talk on the sick podcast with Tony Maninaro.

They need someone else to take faceoffs on the PP. But I just don't think that person exists. Matthews is very good at faceoffs but they'd have to completely redesign and relearn their PP if their main shooter takes it. You can't really move JT until the faceoff situation is sorted
This is such a Leafs result in my opinion. This is how they compare to a great team. Because they're gonna demolish the midfield, have the occassional stinker against terrible teams, and then lose to truly great teams. You need to beat those to win the cup. And the presence in front of the net… oof marone.
Its pretty easy to see that the Rangers are a better balanced team ,probably 10-12 points better over 82 games .Toronto is still in that 2nd level and somewhere around 8th to 10th league wide but they are pretty far away from being a serious threat to win it all until they have a top 5 goaltender that can win those 3-2 and 2-1 games in the semis or the finals .
That game sucked. It was decided by 1 goal. That one goal hit the ref who was standing in the way and because of that a goal is scored that otherwise would have cleared the zone. The second issue is the Rangers were running the Leafs goalie all night and not a single penalty was called. Aside from that it was a balanced game.

Nylanders give away pass and lazy thinking cost them this one u can say ohhh well the Rangers goalie was hot and what ever but if ur top 4 core guys who by the eay take a huge chunk out of the cap cant score then the core four are the problem and keeping these guys is like using a hammer for a head ache

I was at that game you mentioned. We won 4-3 in overtime and you did the one-shot wearing black because “at funerals, we wear black.” It was the LFR with the color clip. “It could be black, it could be blue, it could be green, it could be purple~”
Lets talk Nicholas Robertson. This guy seems jinxed to me. I like him. And I think he's a talented player. BUT each time he starts to do well (throughout his career) he gets injured. Not his fault. But he gets injured and misses time. He has been sent down to the minors and loses his spot. This training camp he shines like gold. So he's handed a regular spot. But now cannot get on the score sheet. I would not bench him. I would play him hard. Maybe shove him on line #2, see what happens. Thuis guy has ability but its like stuck in a bottle.
Tavares's next contract should be 5 million at 2 years MAX. then address it in 2027, perhaps drop him to 3 million for 2 years and go like that til he retires.
