Dump and chase doesn't work. Our one goal came when we carried the puck in. We're also, like Kane said, so focused on defense we forget we have offensive minded players. Our best defense is playing in the O-zone. We're spending no time in our O-zone. 10 shots a game will not win games here. It was the worst game I seen this team play in a while. Last thing. How are our lines supposed to build chemistry when they're constantly being shuffled? It's like every shift is a new line together. Last thing. How are our boys supposed to build chemistry when the lines are constantly being mixed? Every shift seems to be a new line.
When you’re not drawing penalties you’re not working hard enough. What is the ozone system? Lose all board battles 1 vs 2? No forecheck present. Giving too much time to opposition in the defensive zone to pick their play instead of forcing them to make one. How have we not fixed these glaring issues yet coach? It’s been too long. I’ll take the win but holy frick get a grip. The kids look great out there! Kasper helps the lineup so much.
They have been focused on trying to defend properly. They are learning that. Now that they have it figured it out, they can start focusing on the offense

i had suspected here as these games went on that Derek Lalonde DID something this training camp in the coaching emphasis and strategy that resulted in his offense being destroyed, and all his best offensive players being ruined. it seemed clear everyone was now hyperfocused on being 'defensively responsible' and it had ruined the offense. Kane confirms this w his answer 1 minute in, where you can see he chooses his words carefully bc he knows he is trashing Lalonde to the media and saying something that may reverberate in the room. this is a player who does not generally speak thru the media in a way to send messages or cause controversy, he is a good soldier who follows orders and is quiet – but he is obviously fed up w the coaching and is speaking for the whole team right there. this coach is on thin ice imo. he needs to let his skill players play offense.
That was one of the worst NHL games I've ever watched but I'll take the ugly win and a shut out. Nobody apart from Lyon stood out. Very lethargic and Seider was pretty brutal as times.

I know Yzerman would like to stick to the guy he hired and it work out but holy crap the eye test sucks. You think Newsy would be saying the same things about a solid defensive performance if Lyon let in say 2 goals? Does he like the defense in front of lyon then? Cmon man that game looked like a penalty kill for 60 minutes. Constantly defending and guys standing still.Shift after shift in the defensive zone. Maybe the players are young and need more game time to grasp the details in the system but maybe its the coaching? PP sucks 1 guy at the point ain't the look. The Nashville win i thought masked problems cause we shouldn't have won that either. The D very rarely skate the puck out for a breakout they just stop moving feet behind goal line and look up the boards. Neutral zone rushes are always 1 level with no gaps or speed. Im bummed with the hockey im seeing despite these important wins that are important.

to all those complaining that we only had ten shots: in game six of the western conference finals last year, the oilers eliminated the stars 2-1. with mcdavid, draisatl, hyman, et. al., they only had ten shots on goal.
think back to our opening night debacle this year against the penguins. we score first and then play sloppy team defense and get stomped. yes, i heard kane's "frustration". and i saw the beauty that he scored from compher and tarasenko. but, i also saw him getting his pocket picked behind our net, which led to seider taking a penalty.
here are some of the defensive concepts that were on full display: keep the opponents to the outside. clear the net front to prevent rebounds and second chance opportunities. play as a five man unit.
let's be clear in our analysis: .500 hockey after six games, with three wins against playoff teams from last year. our defensive unit, outside of seider and edvinsson, are susceptible. the offensive lines are still in the process of finding chemistry. lyon has shown that he can be a top flight back-up, but most likely isn't a true number one that will be able to carry the team.
right now, we are right on track. we will improve as the year goes on, and we will be even better into the future.

Definitely not a game i'd like to see from this team often this season, but what a gutsy performance on the back end. Great job by the defensive to bend, but not break. Excellent performance from Lyon.

The systems sucks not to mention newsey doesn’t let these lines gel by breaking them up all the fucking time. Not to mention they pass the “Assistant captain” patch around like a fucking peewee team. What the fuck is this guy doing
The defensive system of doing box + 1 isn't working mainly because the red wings never push big pressure on the puck holder to get turnovers. They almost treat it like a power play defense where they just keep them to the outside, but largely let them be free.
This whole dump and chase shit they did last year has come back this year and it's still extremely unreliable. If I had to guess, there'd be at least 50% of the time where the wings will dump the puck into the O zone and just flat out lose it. That's just not gonna work to get to the playoffs.
I really hope that management stops this system they've been doing of box + 1 and pump&dump gameplay. We're basically fucked no matter what regardless of what players we have on our team if they keep doin this in this league.

I used to have coaches that always wanted to play that dump and chase game if you’re going to play that game you have to have team SPEED and the wings don’t have that. Newesy wow that name sucks!

The system doesn’t work. It never did. We have too many offensive power to play dump and chase and sit back in the zone relying on our goaltenders.
Lalonde’s system just doesn’t work. If it wasn’t for strong performance by our goalies, this team could easily be 1-5 or even 0-6.
The team is was lucky that Lyon had a great night because you're going to lose a lot of games with 1 goal on 10 shots.

Lalonde's system isn't working, it's restricting the players offense way too much. Forwards are bored and disinterested.
