@New York Rangers

You absolutely CANNOT do this in the NHL

The New York Rangers just gave it to the Montreal Canadiens and in the first period they scored a strange goal off a no-icing call. We’ll discuss all that and more on today’s NHL hockey video!

  1. Just to put into context all three players stop skating at the top of the circle. The rangers player takes ONE stride and gets to the puck first. Its not like the rangers guy kept skating, he slowed down too, just not as much. This is more on the goalie then the players. Goalie wasnt set.

  2. I feel for my Habs, had a decent showing but had terrible luck, terrible icing non call and a terrible hit to Baron. Hope something comes of it for Trouba.

  3. Both Habs players stopped skating before the dots. They both assumed the play was dead. Neither Rangers player did, and that's why they scored. You have to play to the whistle. If they had just skated a few more strides, it's an easy call for them. It's not a bad call, just a bad play.

  4. The rule showed on screen is not the NHL rule.

This is the NHL rule: [The icing] decision by the Linesperson will be made by no later than the instant the first player reaches the end zone face-off dots with the player's skate being the determining factor. […] If the race for the puck is too close to determine by the time the first player reaches the end zone face-off dots, icing shall be called.

That being said, you're right: you absolutely CANNOT do this in the NHL

  5. The decision point is the face off dot, and determining not who would get to the dot there first, but who will get to the puck first based on where they are at the dot. That's what's in the rule. Both Montreal skaters came off the gas at the blue line, and that is what kept the linesman from calling it. A couple more hard strides from them and it's called icing. Since they started coasting and Edstrom kept paddling, linesman let it go.

  6. All the montreal player had to do was get to the puck first instead he watches a Rangers player

  7. If you're going to show a rulebook for the icing rule, you should probably use the NHL one rather than a USA hockey one. It does make specific reference to the point of determination being which player's skates reach the dots first in the NHL rulebook, and if there is any doubt as to whose skates got there first it is supposed to be given to the defensive team. I know it also makes reference to not being which player reaches the dots first but rather which player would reach the puck first, but once that player does reach the dot first that is supposed to be the end of any further interpretation. From the NHL rulebook and not the USA hockey one: "This decision by the Linesperson will be made by no later than the instant the first player reaches the end zone face-off dots with the player's skate being the determining factor." I think they blew this call, the whole point of this rule was to eliminate players skating hard to the end boards and potentionally crashing into them, and this play seems to eximplify that perfectly. I think this was not the right call by the linesperson.

  8. As a Habs fan….that was lazy. Even if you argue it still should have been icing, there was no reason it should have been that close

  9. Montreal fans can be mad at the defenders only. They slowed down and it’s 100% the right call be the ref. Put in the effort to get the icing. If you’ve been out there for a bit you get to change anyway so why not use some of the energy before you’re on the bench

  10. Rangers scored more points in the first period than the Giants did all game vs the Eagles 🤡

  11. Didn't the NHL change the rules about icing, making it Hydrid icing… to avoid players chansing the puck falling into the board and causing serious injuries ???

the Habs clearly entered the zone first, and would have been the first ones to touch the puck anyways. Hybrid icing allows the ref to make the call based on who's ahead, and who's most likely to touch the puck first. So, it doesn't make any sense for the refs to not call icing.

  12. Whole lotta folks watch the game, but clearly, have no idea wtf the rules are. Refs wave off icing all the time, when it's clear the player had time to stop the puck before it crosses the goal line, but they "ease up to make sure it's icing" the refs wave it off and force them to continue playing. This is no different.

  13. they've complicated icing so much now that nobody knows if its icing or not…just go back to automatic icing…keep it simple…

  14. The Mini bobby Orr "Hutson" got another minus 4 game.
Give em the Norris Montreal 😂😂

  15. Thought this was gonna be about troubas dirty hit.

    .

If you comment you agree it was dirty.

  16. From my understanding, the ref calls it if there's no opposing near the player about to touch up when entering the zone, Estrom was right there and going for it. Isn't the expectation that htey would need to touch up?

  17. So many fans don't understand the rules.
The defining call is made when the whistle is blown! That is the defining issue here. Regardless of icing or whatever a ref may call out, if the whistle is not blown it is not a defining call and could be waved off. Remember that while the defenders can't see behind them, the goalie certainly can see a Ranger player chasing them down and he didn't say or do ANYTHING when he could have stepped out and cleared or covered the puck. The retreating defenders totally switched off and is a good indicator of why they were 3 down in 5 mins of ice time. It's a good call and good goal. At the very best, it's a 50/50 call so if anyone really is moaning about this goal you really need to look at yourselves.

  18. They yell icing but they blow the whistle at the hashmarks. If a forecheck is happening for a chance at the puck they keep it going, granted it's a fair chance.
This is why a lot of people get mad at early whistles on icing cause the player is like, "Hey! I had a chance to touch the puck first" In this case he got to the puck first.

  19. Atleast 5 of these calls last night, in 3 different games. Nashville got the worst of a horrible icing call as well, no goal or anything on the play though

  20. You can see the linesman with his whistle in his mouth, waiving it off later then usual. Waiting too long to make a decision.

  21. 1:00 you mention the linesman is supposed to decide icing or not when the players are at the top of the circles but he waits until they are at the goal line until actually waving it. Yes, the Montreal players should have skated it out but 100% a bad job by the linesman. If he is going to make that determination it needs to be sooner
"If the race for the puck is too close to determine by the time the

first player reaches the end zone face-off dots, icing shall be called."

  22. Also a super odd one in the Leafs/CBJ game, the horn blowing to review a no goal/goal call after the puck was dropped and play continued…
