Edmonton Oilers: Throw Hands, Win Games

The Edmonton Oilers have found their secret sauce this year, and it’s a bit old school. Gotta love a scrappy Edmonton Oilers squad.

  1. Well fought victory for sure! Perry might not be the offensive scorer of yesterday, but what he brings in the twilight of his career has to be respected.

Again, waiting for surgery, couldn't watch the game. Okay from what I heard (yes, I listen to the games and calls) after the Red Wings scored early in the first the Oilers shut the door until almost mid way through the 2nd. First Leon scores on a tip on Birthday gift off of a Detroit D Man. Less than a minute later Detroit retakes the lead on a shot by Andrew Copp. It takes until half way through the third for Bouch to bomb one (93.6 MPH Bouch Bomb). I seriously doubt Talbot even saw it (other than the blur as it went behind him). It took less than 20 second (18 to be exact) in OT for Connor to Ekholm to Leon and in. Leon with another GWG (he seems to have a few of those lately). The Oilers win in OT getting 2 points AND hitting REAL 500 (well a little over that with the OT Looser point but still .500 for wins/losses. Pickard did okay in net. Just stats wise either Nurse and Kulak (or Stetcher) along with Arvidsson and Podkolzin were on the ice for the Red Wings goals so they had the Defensive failures.

What I notice from the numbers. The Oilers had fewer faceoff wins (by 12), Fewer hits (by 12), More Giveaways (by 7), and fewer blocked shots (by 6). They have to get sticks in lanes to block shots. If guys aren't willing to put their bodies on the line for a non-playoff game this won't be pretty and will get worse. Honestly when Detroit took the lead again less than a minute after Leon scored I reviewed my auditory notes on the game and they probably should have lost this one at that stage. It took Bouch to tie things up and Leon to get us into the promised land of a Win.

Next game will have some emotion to it in Columbus. Stu should be in net on the 2nd half of a back to back. While I wish Eklhom and Bouch weren't over 23 minutes each and wish Connor and Leon could have been sub 20 minutes of time on ice we take what we get and hope they have some gas in the tank for tomorrow. Take care all.

  4. While I whole heartedly agree, the Oil have needed to show they've got some "hair on the ass" for a while now. But Old men and little guys doin it sucks.
