Prior to 2015 the next Leafs defenceman drafted outside the first round that played at least 50 games for Toronto was … Carl Gunnarsson (2007).
The most number of games a non first round defenceman drafted by Toronto since 2016 has played for Toronto so far is 6 games (Mac Hollowell). Kral played in 2, Durzi never played for Toronto.
Maybe guys like Niemela will be able to play but in my opinion the Leafs have really struggled to draft and develop defenceman for some time now. I hope Liljegrin is able to turn things around in San Jose.

The next player dealt away from the Leafs could well be Matt Benning. He cannot remain on the Leafs roster for long with all of Calle Jarnkrok, Connor Dewar and Jani Hakanpaa close to returning. He is also not likely to clear waivers and the Marlies do not need any more veterans with more than 260 pro games.

The boomer fans love this trade. As someone that never liked Lily's game at all, i still think this is an L for the leafs. We could have traded him at the beginning of last season, his value was higher than Sandin's, and he fetched a first +. It's upsetting seeing another player wasted from the 2016-2018 era. 6 years of development and we moved him for basically nothing. 25 year old RHD, i think he will be a solid top 4 option in San Jose. I don't think he will reach the upside of Rasmus Andersson type player but he will put up 40+ points and develop there.
