it's a good trade but i wont go as far as calling it a steal
The Leaf's need the picks because their scouts have found so many talents across the globe. Question now is if Matt Benning can help the Leaf's?
Leafs fleeced the sharks on that deal.
Timmy another 1st rounder for the leafs didn't pan out thats 2 first rounder are gone for the leafs sandin ,timmy will they got good return for sandin ,cowen
Amazing deal! Who's running the sharks lol! can you imagine what you get for Marner!
Love that they cleared cap. And if they waive Benning and he clears, all of his salary is buried except for 100k. That means the leafs clear out almost the full 3mil cap hit. Great job Tre!
A depth dman plus a pick with about a 10% chance of getting an NHLer and a pick with a less than 5% chance for a guy who will play in the NHL for years to come. The only good thing is cap space but here we are talking like this is the most one sided trade ever. Lol
Great trade for both sides. San Jose gets a serviceable right-shot d-man who can move the puck really well. Toronto frees up cap space, gets two draft picks, and a serviceable d-man who's on a $1.25M contract.
3rd and 6th round picks … meh. Same goes for Matt Benning.
It should be noted though…. Benning was being benched and healthy scratched lots this season on the Sharks. Sharks fans are thrilled to have him gone as he was struggling to be apart of the Top-6 D-men there.
It’s not always what we got it’s what we released ie cap space and allows better players to come in.
Liljegren was a mostly solid, uneventful type of D. Neither an offensive force or a defensive shutdown specialist, he would be a good 3rd line D for many NHL teams
Lmao I wouldn't call it a haul, but yeah good work Tre. I still remember Lily getting drafted and I was just ecstatic he fell to the leafs, he was a guy I was hoping for that entire year (when were bad in the mid 2010s, I was a draft nerd) and he was just a guy I really thought would change the fabric of the team and be a core piece. Alas, no, but he still has that potential imo. Some defenceman are extremely late bloomers, and I hope he has a Gustav Forsling type of arc. If only he had some snarl man, what could have been.
A transaction where everybody wins: Leafs: get cap space, a depth player + draft picks for an un-used player. Sharks: get a puck moving top pair defenseman and potential powerplay qb. Benning: gets a shot to play in the playoffs. Liljegren: gets to play in a role that is much more suited for his talents on a rebuilding team where he can rebuild his confidence with tons of minutes on the ice.
The only way this team really changes it's identity is if they make a major trade by convincing 1 of the so called big boy players to agree to move there no move clause and get a return back in a deal no trade clauses screw this league and every other league on making major trades
Don't get too excited about Benning
Don't forget to that their ultimate goal is a second line center
Lilygren being traded was no surprise, it's the return that was the surprise
Benning is either a depth defender, or on waivers, if Tre doesn't flip him
Tre will need to decide who they'll bring back first either Dewar or Hackanpaa, unless Tre has another move coming
Tre has many options here, he could trade Benning, waive him or if need be they could move Myers, maybe even Timmins, but there's Kampf, Jankrok, let's not forget about Robertson. Something still has to give if Tre wants to activate both of Dewar and Hakanpaa.
Dumping lily is already a plus regardless of what we got back.
