Whenever I see these arbitrary cut-off years, i always wonder what it hides.
So i went back and looked.
1. there’s the obvious Joe Malone who had 44 goals in 20 games in the inaugural NHL season. All in all, 50 goals in his first 28 games. 2. Newsy Lalonde was scoring almost 2 goals per game in average for the habs back in the nha. if we only count the nhl, he got 50 in 89 games, all when he was past 30 yrs old. 3. Aurèle Joliat got 50 in his first 68 games (13+15+22). 4. Howie Morenz got 50 in his first 66 games (13+27+10).
So this is likely why the graphic started with the Original 6. There was 3 guys in the earlier era who did it even faster than Maurice, and a 4th to slot between Richard and Beliveau.
if you wonder about the timelines:
Lalonde and Malone were nha stars who were later in their careers when the NHL began in 1917. they were old when they played with a rookies Joliat and Morenz in the early 20’s. Morenz died tragically, but Joliat played long enough to be on the same team as a rookie Toe Blake in the late 30’s, who then played long enough to play with a rookie Richard in the early 40’s.
Richard was born in 1921, so his childhood idols were Joliat and Morenz. Those were the standards back then.
