Why The Canucks WANT TO GIVE Their 1st Round Pick In 2020 Instead Of 2021 (NHL Draft News & Rumours)

NHL Deputy Commissioner and Chief Legal Officer Bill Daly recently sent out a memorandum to the 31 National Hockey League teams regarding the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and in it contained some really interesting information as to what the NHL is proposing. There’s a lot to uncover, but the main point I wanted to discuss in this video lies in how the NHL is proposing to change its draft lottery process; changing it from three lotteries for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, to only one lottery for 1st overall this year, and this year only.

The June would also be held in June, which is a highly discussed point in the memo, and a heavily-contested one at that. For the Vancouver Canucks though, it puts up a different question, as to whether or not the conditions of the J.T. Miller trade can, or even should, be adjusted. The way it stands right now, the Canucks would be in a playoff position should the NHL season continue, meaning that the pick that they would give up to the New Jersey Devils (they acquired VAN’s 1st from the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Blake Coleman trade) would be the pick from this year, and not the 1st rounder from the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. Pierre LeBrun highlighted on Twitter how this is the more desirable route for the Canucks, which sparked even more debate.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The current NHL Draft Lottery odds, go in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. We only had toffili for 10 games this season he wasn’t a season defining player if we have him next year that’s a massive plus but if not it won’t make us much worse next season without him

  2. Way too much negative thinking here for Canuck executives to even remotely consider the prospect. If the wheels fall off next year and we get third overall pick there is no guarantee it would be better then a top ten pick this year. To run the organisation fearful of being the next San Jose is wrong on so many levels. The only thought should be making a run in the playoffs. If the key concerns are worrying about injuries, Is Marky going to have an off season, will players regress.. then we need a new, forward thinking executive.

  3. You want to give up this year cause all it takes is one injury of Petterson or someone else big and there goes your season and next years pick could be really good

  4. They could easily hold the draft in late July. August may be a possibility too. Just not making sense to have it in early June.
Is this just another Bettmann promotion stunt as the NFL had great ratings for their draft in April.

  5. I had a strong feeling that once San Jose didn't resign Pavelski that they would be a dumpster fire this season. I was proven very right.

  6. As a Devils fan I am completely feeling the same way. At first I really wanted this years pick to convert due to how deep this draft is. I haven’t really looked into next years class at all. As I opened my eyes to the idea of an unprotected selection next year that’s definitely interesting. I also expect the Canucks to be a better team next season but you make A lot of good points. Everything has to go right. I also expected a better Devils team with the addition of Hughes and look how our season went.

  7. you may have a point there
with the annoying luck The Devil have yes give them this year.
Outside of the Leaf, NJ is the team i dislike the most. So no free bee for the Devil
I hope that player you got is really worth of that first round pick on a exceptional year

  8. If draft is really that good, I'm pretty sure that JB & and JB have some players in the later rounds on their list that will pan out to be middle 6 or even top 6 talents. This is especially true when the team planned on giving this year's first so they must've sent a lot of time scouting for jems in the later rounds. If they do worst in the standings next season, they could draft Luke Hughes.

  9. I dunno. Such a deep draft. I'd rather hedge my bet and draft this year.

  10. If there are no playoffs this year the condition should be bumped to 2021 and 2022 where it's protected for 2021 if they miss the playoffs but then an unprotected 2022 pick goes to NJ.

  11. People forget that we got Miller for that first round pick and he’s worked out pretty well so far. Sign Toffoli and we have two excellent players that are proven versus the crap shoot of a draft pick. Canucks have depth in their prospects right now so keeping some experience to balance the youth is important.
