The “reality check again” thread is an interesting read. It suggests that

    1. People are finally starting to realize why there were tempered expectations of this team at the start of the season and
    1. The average fan (understandably) doesn’t spend enough time watching the rest of the league.

We aren’t and have never been 1-2 players or 1-2 injuries away from being a playoff-level team. At full health, our top line/pair is great but not elite. That’s fine. Other, better teams have that, too. But they tend to also have a better second lines/pairings and better depth (e.g., CAR, DAL, WPG, NJD ). Or teams have similar depth to us but significantly more talented top lines (e.g., NYR, TBL, BOS, EDM).

This is so obvious when it comes to our PP. Modern PPs are systems, to an extent, but they’re also often just talent exploitations. No disrespect to Sunny and Walman (especially with the heater Walman has been on) but a set of talented PP units doesn’t include either of them. Maybe sunny on a second unit, and Walman as a lone man at the point but certainly not as a SECOND defenseman often playing with your first unit.

We’re an improving team, but we don’t have the talent to compete consistently with elite teams. We have the ability to out-effort them at times and make things happen, but we don’t have the level of talent around the league to compete at a top tier level. If guys like edvinsson pan out, and if a Kasper can be a top 6 guy, were moving in the right direction. Personally, it still feels as though Stevie is going to buy a UFA C in the next two years, probably dependent upon the Larks and Bert contracts (or returns, if we move Bert).

I love our franchise and I’ll watch every game possible until the day i die, but we’re just not yet as talented as you need to be to compete in the modern NHL. And it’s not due to injuries.

Late thread. Someone must have hand a long night octuple-fisting ginger ales.

  3. The same week Vrana was waived, Mantha appears headed to be a scratch. Via bultman.

Just thinking out loud, lots of talk around here about our team not being skilled enough. Do you guys think Seattle has a lot of skilled players? Obviously Beniers is a high pick and rightfully so, he boasts the entire package you would want in a young center, but other than that what you guys reckon? Cos they are blowing teams out easy and its not scrappy goals either. 8 goals against Ottawa, 7 against Toronto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln-Sj2tzKqs

Disclaimer that this is a small sample size and a public model (not a private one so good that teams hire the people making it) but per MoneyPuck, Detroit’s goaltender with the highest cumulative GSAX is… Magnus Hellberg.

I am just gonna come out and say it. I think this franchise is ran by an old boys club and that’s why this franchise is having a hard time. As many as you know, the front office is filled with vets from cup winning teams, and is lead by one. I’ve only watched the wings in their rebuilding years and I’ve noticed that the team each year has the same type of season. Where the high points is at the beginning of the season and then the wheels falls off the bus for the remaining of the season.

Why is it like this? Is there something that changed in hockey management that changed several years ago? Why does the staff proselytize defense first? We’ve seen the GM changes and the coaching changes and a huge roster turnover but the on the ice product still remains the same. I don’t have time to watch every game like I’ve used to and I will turn off the game when the wheels falls off. I still love this team very much and I would hate to be called a fair weather fan.

Honestly I don’t think the management *gets* how times have changed and how there is a big culture disconnect between rebuilding a team *in this current year* and have a front office of boomer cup champions.

Probably deleting twitter because it’s bad for your brain

Not to say reddit can’t be bad for your brain

    But twitter is worse

I don’t think you build chemistry overnight. Elite players can play with anyone and lift their game, but I think the inconsistency in our line up and player juggling/injuries are something to consider.
