I’d much rather keep him than trade him because I don’t think you are going to get the same value trading him over keeping him. if this season is just a fluke or he doesn’t improve year two, the bridge deal will sting but won’t destroy the club like an OEL contract. I think clubs won’t be clamouring to get into a bidding war over half a season of NHL play. That said, his abilities are pretty obvious so if you do trade him, whatever you get is basically free since we signed him in FA.

  2. It’s almost like signing Miller was a bad call, right guys?

Please. Give Pettersson a linemate he can play with for the majority of his career. He deserves the skill alongside him that Kuzmenko brings. Do not give him a revolving door of wingers that never stick. We know Kuzmenko works with him. Let him have that security.

  4. I don’t think I would be upset with either outcome if the return can include a first, or his AAV is no more than Boeser’s.

Obviously I’d prefer more assets, or a lower contract. But if we can do either of those, I’ll be satisfied with the outcome.

Unless we sign him, and then hear that we turned down Seattle’s offer of Shane Wright and their next 7 first round picks .

$6 million on a bridge deal does nothing for us as an organization trade him. Keeping him for 3 years to improve a team that we would all like to see rebuild would be a bad idea.

  6. If we sign Kuzmenko before we ship other contracts out the Canucks will be hamstringing themselves in any future trade negotiations as every team in the league will be able to use our cap situation against us. We’d most likely have to add “sweeteners” to any deal we try to swing.

Move people out AND THEN work on signing Kuzmenko.

Also, if you take Smyl’s comments from STH forum into consideration, how the hell can we sign Bo and Kuzmenko. Nothing from this management group makes sense.

Signing him doesn’t make much sense. We can only afford a bridge deal, which would be useful if this team was poised to compete in the next 2-3 years, but we aren’t. Additionally he is already 27, he only has a few good statistical years left. Why waste them with a team that won’t be any good? He has positive value as a rental or a finishing piece on a contender, we have to capitalize on that.

  8. I don’t mind keeping him, but he is also the best deadline rental in a price/performance ratio. If we could make off with a ransom for moving him I wouldn’t be sad.

Trade him for picks and bundle those picks with bad contracts?

  10. The decision whether to keep him or trade him should be completely up to Pettersson

He’s been fun to watch and one of the few bright spots this season but to re-sign him just feels like such familiar territory for this team.

Additionally, his NHL play is still kind of a small sample size and not sure how much of his success has been a product of playing on Petey’s wing

    I’m torn

A Kuz trade could potentially make this deadline haul immense, especially if we get good value for Schenn but man it sucks seeing a player that Petey meshes with potentially leaving. Especially because this may not be a fluke and there is a genuine chance he is a 70pts/game-ish player who can play first line minutes on a contender.

However, because of signing Miller and the lack of assets signing him has provided, they need to reset and sadly, trading Kuz and Bo is the best possible solution towards going into a rebuild.

PS: If they trade Miller somehow, then signing Kuzmenko should be a priority, especially if he is under $7m AAV.

Personally I think we should trade all of Schenn, Kuz, Bear, Dermott, Horvat and any else expiring between now and the end of next season. After Myers and Pearson are off the books I think it will be easier to build something with the cap space you get by moving off of all those players

  14. Complex-Kale2019

Why does everyone keep saying bridge deal? He’s an unrestricted free agent in the summer just like Bo. We either have to get assets for him, outbid every other team in the league or lose him for nothing

  15. QuiGGz96

I have nothing but positive vibes for kuzy…. But he should absolutely be traded. That cap hit should have so much value in this trade market. Same thing we should’ve done with Miller last year… right players wrong time.

This seems like such a Canucks situation to screw up. We are a non-playoff team with 70-point pending UFA making under $1 million per year. Why are we trying to complicate this again?

Yeah he looks good and he’ll be worth a lot more if he keeps this up over a 2-3 year bridge deal.

But this is the exact thing we always do. We sign the pending UFA who hasn’t proven themselves outside of 1 year to a multi year deal and they have no value by the end.

We keep gambling on ‘this pending UFA will still be maintaining these great numbers in a few years so we can trade them then’. How’s that worked out so far?

It’s the same thing always. Don’t worry guys, Kuzmenko is different! We won’t regret not selling him as a rental the way we’ve regretted not selling a ton of rentals in the past. This time it will work out of course /s

  17. _HoochieMama

I mean do your due diligence but this is a layup. Trade him.

  18. daaanish

They should just ask Petey who he wants around him and jettison the rest. I have a feeling EP40 wants Kuz.

  19. nite_awol

Watch us somehow manage to trade Miller, only to give that same contract to Kuzmenko.

  20. NotoriousBananaHavoc

I feel like if we sign him it’s on the basis he will mentor pods

  21. bobwong128

Honestly any thing over 5 seems bad imo, he’s only played one season, a very good season, but we would be stupid to over pay for such a small sample size. Plus he’s only been producing with petterson this season

  22. ClosPins

If we can’t re-sign him by the trade deadline, we have to trade him or risk losing a valuable asset for nothing. But… Trading him at the deadline lowers our (already slim) hopes of making the playoffs, which Aquilini will be loath to do. His agent has said they don’t want to negotiate until the end of the season, meaning we’ll have to offer him the moon in order to get him to sign early. So… Putting all that together (and taking Canucks history into account), we’ll surely massively over-pay to re-sign him.

  23. Actual-Studio1054

Please don’t. He’ll be 30 before this team even hints at being a contender. Use this deadline to get as many future pieces as possible.
