The New York Islanders Cannot Be a One-Man Team, Ilya Sorokin Needs Help

Ilya Sorokin played a very strong game but the rest of the New York Islanders were sloppy and more or less passengers in a 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild. We break down the failures of the power play, the strong penalty kill and we have our unsung hero and our goat of the game.

Plus, we preview Saturday’s home game against the Montreal Canadiens which is looking more and more like a must-win game for this team. We tell you what it will take to beat the Habs.

And we remember one of the most famous games in Isles history as part of our Islanders Birthday of the Day.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. HI Gil. You said it perfectly. The transition from trotz to lane don't work without the horses to do it. And all i see is sputtering isle offense rearing its ugly head once again. Two goals in two games-both at home-where isles desperately need wins. Now down to 19th in gf. pp now 27th. And when i look at this game i see two middling teams fighting just to make the playoffs except wild have the one thing the isles don't have. A guy that can break a close game open in kaprizov. And lou could kill two birds with one stone by finding that scorer that could juice up the pp as well. Isle pp so predictable. Isle offense scares no one. Sorokin can't do it all by himself. Neither can barzal. That is the sad truth. And isles are more prone to mistakes now under lane more wide-open system. Trotz did miracles with such a weak talentless roster. We are now finding out mid-season lane aint no miracle worker. Good in depth show once again.

  2. We've been saying it for years, no talent, no cup. This team has very little talent. Period. Lou did this with the devils. Great goalie and nobody who can score.

  3. I wonder if our GM is as sick of this lineup as WE are. I'm sure he's STILL "happy with the group that we have". Ledecky and Malkin better be paying attention.

  4. So many Islander fans are delusional, thinking this team will make the playoffs. Are there any other franchises that have the same dang 4th line for 8 years? "IDENTITY" line, yea that makes sense because their identity is a bunch of 4th line / 3rd line bums that can't score. This team is BLOATED with bad contracts of 3rd line losers that can't score or skate. Their 100 year old GM refuses to call up offensive talented players in BP to try and give a spark. No no no! He will put that F- loser Palmeri back in before that. The team is a Joke other than the best goalie in the NHL SoroKING & Barzal.

  5. Major problem when your best line is your 4th line.

    Moves need to be made.

Also, Dobson doesn’t need to be on the ice when we pull the goalie.

How many times does this make it where he’s turned over the puck at the blue line with an empty net?

  6. For first time this year, I'm doubting that this team will even make the playoffs. Since elimination game against TB 2 years ago, I've been waiting for Isles to rebound to that level of play and I simply don't see it. We cannot put together a consistent, cohesive 60 minutes of play. Last night was perfect example. We skated hard and kept the lid on the Wild for almost 50 minutes. But the constant parade into the penalty box eventually caught up to us. What's more concerning, I now think that problems go far deeper than simply bringing in a sniper.
