This is such a dumb take. You don’t trade away a goaltender playing at a near HoF level and at the top of the league for potential. There are a couple players you keep during a rebuild. Saros, Josi, and with his new contract Forsberg and maybe Duchene. You get rid of dead weight like Ekholm or Johansson and you build a team around a couple key players. I’d be the head of the Askarov fan club probably, and think he’ll be amazing. But it takes a long time for a goalie to develop, Saros will still have value and may be even more valuable later in his career as well. For all the talk about tanking, it really doesn’t work the same in the NHL anyways. Even if you suck, first round draft picks have no guarantee of being starters, compared to a league like the NFL. It’s a random chance of getting Bedard if you flat out destroy the team to tank, otherwise anything outside of a fifth pick is a crapshoot.
Saros hasn’t even hit his prime yet most likely, as that happens later for goalies, and so why rebuild by trading what is essentially a young player with a ton of potential? Isn’t the point of rebuilding getting young talent that is underpaid and has potential? Seems like Saros would fit into that.
Edmonton had three years where they had the first pick of the draft and they sucked for years. They still are mid, even with the best player in the world. High draft picks have no guarantee of success, just because it worked for teams like the penguins and Crosby. Most teams in the league need to build through long term development. Why tank if you don’t need to? Have both Saros and Askarov carry the team for a couple years while talent develops and some older players get traded.
I’m team fire the GM and Coach, keep some of the core, and continue to develop players that aren’t Cole Smith.
In a weird way I’m kind of onboard with a “competitive rebuild” and it is sort of playing out now. Rebuild, while you stay competitive because you have two world class goalies. I think the rebuild shouldn’t get Poile fired, moves like trading or waiving key prospects and assets like Tolvenon and Fiala and hiring Hynes should get him fired. Poile has never shown the ability to hire coaches and draft to put forwards in a position to succeed and we have enough evidence of that in his long career. I don’t trust him with any sort of asset management moving forward. As much as I like Ryan, Nino, and Granlund, it’s so confusing why we spent money on those players when we could have used those spots to help develop other players. The indirect impact of Poile being loyal to, and screwing up, with hiring Hynes is that now he’s managing assets poorly to “give him a good team.” Fucking why? And that’s before the wild decisions like waiving Tolvenon over Cole freaking smith, and having a coach that doesn’t know how to put his young players in a position to develop and succeed. What the hell is Tomasino doing in the AHL? Moves like wasting opportunities to develop players and being unable to develop players should get them both fired.
