Does Dustin Brown really deserve his number retired and a statue to commemorate his career? I’m not a Kings fan, so I I’m kind of confused by this. Maybe somebody can sway me to support this.

Stanley Cups talk. Bullshit squawks. Up in the rafters his sweater goes…

  2. Fine-Guest-2165

Played his whole career in LA, brought them their first cup. Why not?

  3. ItsSoBig14

    Number retired definitely.

Do they have other statues built? Not sure he’d be #1 on the list but if there are others, might be a better argument.

  4. defector-antal

He’s one of the greatest American captains most definitely.

  5. You answered your own question when you said you weren’t a Kings fan.

He obviously means a lot to that franchise.

  6. GlizzyGod17

Why would you need to be swayed to support this when you’re not a kings fan? This post is hella confusing.

  7. short-and-ugly

It is a little strange because he never had crazy numbers and they took away his captaincy to give it to Kopitar, but the cups, the leadership, and the fact he was a career long King makes it make sense. I’d say jersey retirement but a statue does feel a bit much

Sidenote: the waterbottle gif of him is elite

Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson… Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille, and now Dustin Brown will have statues there. I don’t disagree with retiring his number, but a statue seems wrong. You’ll definitely need to add Kopitar, Doughty, and Quick to the statue group when they retire now.

  9. Sonicboom343

Wonder if Kopitar will get the same treatment?

  10. DeIicious_fishStick

The only thing dumber than this question is Minnesota retiring “1” for the fans.

  11. GameofCHAT

For me, it’s not so much how deserving he is, but if you do that for him, will you do it to Kopitar, and Doughty and end up with statues everywhere?

  12. Gomillionaire1206

20 seasons and 1300 games played with a single franchise is a pretty impressive feat in itself!

  13. douglasCCM

There would be no debate in Toronto for a statue of Wendell Clark or Dougie Gilmore. Neither were lifelong Leafs and neither won a cup with the team. The are simply legends to the fan base.

  14. BeeQueenbee60

Strange, as Kobe Bryant doesn’t have a statue yet.

  15. Who cares, jersey retirements and statues are for the fans of the franchise, not the rest of us. He was the captain of two Cup winning teams.

  16. IsTheBlackBoxLying

Retired number is reasonable at least on the basis of having a fairly pivotal leadership role during the best run in franchise history. But a statue for a guy with no awards and not even a single All Star game to his name is crazy.

To me, this would be like giving Alex Steen a statue here in St. Louis.

  17. Darth_blaze69

Could it be possible that he was deeply involved In the community and had some charities to help those in need and that’s why they are commemorating him? There has to be a valid reason to build a statue of him one would think???

He’s the Kings’ all-time leader in games played and the NHL record holder for career hits, but the biggest thing is that he led our franchise to our first two Stanley Cups. That’s a hell of an accomplishment for a franchise that used to be led by Wayne Gretzky. He’s the only American-born captain to lift the Cup twice, and pretty much any Kings fan you ask will tell you he should have never lost his captaincy.

He did a damn good job of leading the team through the best stretch of success we’ve ever had, and less than two years later they took the C from him to try and shake things up. I love Darryl Sutter and Dean Lombardi for what they did for our team, but I’m always gonna have a sour taste in my mouth about them for that.

  19. Semantic_Satiator

Captain of their cup teams and a fan favorite. Makes sense. I disagree, but it makes sense.

  20. ziggybaumbaum

He was the most important captain in Kings History, presiding over our two Stanley Cup Championships, and he played an exceptionally big role in the first (2012) Stanley Cup Championship.

This is a statue for *KINGS* Fans, nobody else. Obviously his numbers don’t warrant a Hall of Fame Statue, but we’re not talkin’ about that. This is a statue in front of the *KINGS* arena for *our fans,* and HELL YES he damn well deserves it.

As someone old enough to remember when #99 joined the club in ‘88 and the whole Gretzky era, I’d argue Dustin Brown deserves this more than arguably even Gretzky in terms of what he accomplished for The Kings.

  21. He was the captain for the only two ups wins in history. He deserves it all. The statue will be of him with the cup so they get that out front.

  22. Guy_onna_Buffalo

Not a hard Kings fan but having grown up in the LA area, I think he deserves it. He was consistent, never gave up, always gave the team his all. He almost embodies the gritty working class attitude of LA in the 90s, and his physical style of play endeared him to people here.

  23. Hopfit46

He has been their heart and soul guy for years. Hockey is about laying it out there every night and fans loved him…wich is what matters.

  24. Guy_onna_Buffalo

Also, the amount of bitterness and disdain from fans of other teams here is incredible. Why so salty about something that doesn’t affect you or matter to your team in the slightest?

  25. bruinfan178

When the Kings won the cups he was a HUGE part of it. He was the captain of what will probably be the Franchise’s most successful and iconic era for quite a while.

  26. kinglouie_vs_Reptar

Dude was clutch in winning those cups a pure fucking animal. I’m a wings fan and he reminded me of stevies heart, deserves it

  27. juicygoosy921

yes. yes, and yes. 2 cups. career player. even has a mark messier leadership award. guy was a grinder and leader for that team/franchise for basically 2 decades.

also – rangers fan – this guy was part of us not getting a cup and i still say yes.

  28. KennyMoney420

I’ve always looked at Dustin Brown as an inspirational player- a player who is a great role model for young players. He overcame alot to make the NHL- he had speech problems growing up that resulted in it being harder to fit in and succeed as teenage hockey player. We all know how ruthless the teasing in locker rooms can be.

He played up and down that kings roster in whatever role he was needed. Ended up wearing the C winning the cup. So often its the superstars that get the limelight, the highlights. Its rarely the hardest workers, the guys that sacrifice in the background.

Always one of my favorite players to watch and root for. Deserves every honor he gets!

  29. daptonic

Captained the first Kings team to bring the Cup home, nearly 1300 games played, led by example. I don’t see any reason not to retire his jersey and put up a statue.

  30. draven_im

If you’re not a Kings fan, why does this matter to you? I’m not a Michigan fan, nor did I grow up watching hockey, so it’s confusing to me why Detroit retired the numbers it did, but then again I wasn’t part of that fandom. Be incredibly close-minded if I started saying that guys in Boston don’t deserve their number retired, or that Orr doesn’t deserve his statue falling over just cuz I never saw him.

  31. TheCivilRanger

He absolutely does. He was a king for two decades, played like 1,200 games, put up respectable points (not incredible but still good), and was a real mother fucker to play against. That alone deserves the number in the rafters. Then you look at the fact that he helped bring the franchise their first two cups and I’d say that franchise should absolutely be celebrating the shit out of that man.

  32. DangleWho

He was the captain that led them to 2 cups no shit he deserves a statue

  33. 20_Something_Tomboy

Maybe they’re trying to make up for taking away his C?

  34. Pyrokid113

I remember there were trade talks of him right before their first cup

  35. MamuhSwan

Regardless of any redditors support, it’s happening. I think it’s cool and he had one heck of a career with the organization.

  36. JiffTheJester

Haha I never thought this guy was that good, but that was my late teen years when they made their cup runs. I was more focused on my own hockey than NHL stuff

  37. TheYoungRakehell

He’s like the Daneyko of the Kings. Committed to the franchise, never quit, paid a physical price through good times and bad – if you’re not an LA fan, you may not understand, as most non-NJ don’t understand Daneyko’s number retirement.

An individual statue is weird but a group one for the LA 4 is fine.

  38. Ginger-Beefcake

He wasn’t a producer but they won a couple cuts with him as captain. Not sure if I’d statue him but retired? Absolutely.

  39. Drnedsnickers2

Will the statue depict Brown hitting someone after the whistle?
