I don’t know how you can write an article, or make a documentary, about Ballard’s life without mentioning that he covered up the rape of children in his building by his staff.

Years ago I took a hockey team of 15-year-olds to Montreal for a tournament. We were lucky enough to get into see the Canadiens and Leafs practice in the old Montreal Forum during a Friday off day for both teams. Leafs were in town to play them the next day on Saturday.
While walking around the Montreal Forum with the kids we bumped into Harold Ballard. I had already told the kids to be careful not to make any wise ass comments about Quebec or French Canada. Kids were great as you would expect. We got talking to Harold and he was actually pretty nice and spent some time with the kids. Finally asked us what we were in Montreal for. Told him we are in town for a hockey tournament. And he said and I quote, “So you’re here to beat the fucking frogs too are you.” Kids just looked at me and I didn’t know what to say. So I just thanked Harold and we went on our way. True story that I’ll never forget.

My Dad would take me to the gardens in the 70’s. I remember looking over at Ballard’s box where he watched the games from. It was ice level within feet of the fans in the corner. He was always there watching every game. In the hockey world and the “Leaf Nation” as its referred to today, Ballard was bigger than life, a popular character. Wasn’t a person who didn’t know him. Loved and hated. Curses? Myself a non believer, but his legacy, a chapter in Leaf history is all.

Ballard literally won four Stanley Cups, but sure, there’s a curse that’s punishing guys who were mostly born after he died. There’s an extremely long list of bad people who have succeeded in every sport. Pretending the results are part of any morality play is ridiculous and destructive.

I’m 42, I’ve heard everyone older than me talk about the Ballard Curse. Not one has ever said how or why he fucked the team. Really looking forward to this

Darryl Sittler tore of his C because of ballard. Ballard was a crook who went to jail. Ballard ignored the WHA and refused to give even nominal raises to his players causing a number to bolt (although pelyk making $400K at the time was outrageous). There is a long long list of people he screwed one way or another. He also didn’t give a flying fuck what other people thought which really pissed off the “cognescenti” of the time. I remember tearing up my season ticket invoice (rec’d one week after the season ended the 21st place leafs demanding payment in 30 days or lose them). After being on top for years, he left the leafs a sorry lot that has yet to recover its former glory.

Big time character. He used to have the Gardens staff do his landscaping at his house in Etobicoke. I used to walk by it on my way to grade school. One of my parents best friends was one of his executives. He once told me he didn’t care if you were a top guy or an employee sweeping the floors, he treated you the same….either one had to get him a coffee when he wanted….haha.
