The Vancouver Canucks have traded captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Anthony Beauvillier, prospect Aatu Raty and a conditional first-round pick in 2023, the club announced.
The 2023 pick is top-12 protected, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
“First of all, we would like to thank Bo Horvat for all that he has done for the Vancouver Canucks during his nine seasons in Vancouver,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a statement. “He has been a great leader and ambassador for our hockey club.
“As difficult as it is to trade away our captain, we are excited to add a high-quality 25-year-old winger in Anthony Beauvillier, a young centre in Aatu Raty, and a protected first-round draft pick. These pieces will be a big part of our development and growth moving forward.”
Horvat, a pending unrestricted free agent, is in the middle of a career-best season, with 31 goals and 24 assists through 49 games, good enough to earn him a spot on the Pacific Division’s NHL All-Star Game roster.
Amid his success and the Canucks’ struggles, it became increasingly clear the Canucks would trade their captain as talks intensified over the last 10 days.
“I believe we’ve taken our best shot. The contract we have on the table for Bo right now is fair value for what he’s done up to this year,” Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford said on Jan. 16. “It’s certainly under market value for what he’s done this year so we’re in a pickle here. He’s had a career year, and he’s looking for his money. He deserves it. I don’t blame him.
“Even with what we have on the table for him now without any changes … we’re well over the cap on projections. There are ways of moving money around but the fact of the matter is it’s always a tough fit.”
Now he’s the first domino to fall on a Canucks roster that will likely undergo more changes.
Horvat is due a major pay raise from his current $5.5 million cap hit. The Canucks, who entered the season right up against the cap, signed fellow centre J.T. Miller last off-season to a seven-year, $56-million extension which kicks in next season.
The trade comes eight days after head coach Bruce Boudreau was fired and replaced with Rick Tocchet.
The Canucks enter the NHL All-Star break in sixth place in the Pacific Division with a 20-26-3 record.
Beauvillier has nine goals and 11 assists in 49 games this season, while Raty has two goals in 12 games.
Raty also has seven goals and eight assists in 27 games with the American Hockey League’s Bridgeport Islanders.
In Horvat, the Islanders receive some much-needed scoring punch and star power. The club had struck out on attracting a number stars recently, including Johnny Gaudreau last off-season.
Horvat was selected ninth overall by the Canucks in the 2013 NHL Draft, a pick Vancouver acquired from then-Devils GM Lou Lamoriello in exchange for Corey Schneider.

Every trade is a loss if it doesn't lead to a Stanley Cup
What’s happening for Vegas trade deadline this season
Canucks are tanking, there's no sting to this trade. It would have hurt to see him walk for nothing like other players in recent memory.
Like the Keenan/Messier era, you have a coach who’s only coached parts of 2 seasons and got fired around the All-Star game (Keenan, Boudreau) and was replaced by someone who’s won before (Crawford, Tocchet),
and a beloved captain who was traded to the Islanders (Linden, Horvat)
all done by management/ownership who is hated by the fans (Keenan, Rutherford), (McCaw, Aquilinni).
The difference is that we actually liked the coach and captain.
Rare win for Vancouver
New York wins if they re-sign Bo to a solid deal or flip him within the month.
Vancouver wins if their futures end up panning out and if they get proper value out of Beauvillier.
Way too early to gauge who is the true winner of the trade. I do have my doubts that the Canucks could have held out for something better.
Everyone who says Raty is progressing extraordinarily well with us has to realize he's only played TWELVE GAMES. settle down. Fabricating talking points.
Islanders got a very good player. Vancouver got potential, but it's all how they use that potential
Vancouver gives up their captain and best player on the team for players they hope might possibly be ok in he future or make the team and contribute like 10 goals per season. Seems to be
Lots of those players around. Not easy to get a player like Horvat. Why give him away. Vancouver will be a very poor team for a long time with this ownership group. Millar is a toxic egomaniac and they sign a bad deal with him but can’t sign their best most consistent and disciplined player.
BEST THING that EVER HAPPENED FOR BO ! NO FUTURE FOR the CANUCKS, NEVER GOING ANYWHERE.
if Bo doesn't re-sign with the Islanders its a loss for them. Otherwise its a fair deal all around.
canucks got flamed lol
Disappointing return, an underachieving winger, a prospect center that got upside but major question marks and a protected 1st that doesn't track to a potential star? And that's the best deal we could get? Smells more of desperation than anything. What did the Islanders really give up other than someone they had no interest in keeping, a prospect they could afford to give up and a first in a deep draft that doesn't track to a potential star player.
Why do they have this idiot breaking down trades? He knows nothing.
I’m mad that raty is gone
2nd Canucks Captain to the Islanders. First trade brought in some great players.
Not the first time the Canucks have traded a captian at the all star break to the Islanders. Linden in 98.
Should have done something to get rid of the OEL cap hit
Too early to tell how this pans out… Seems like a bit of an odd move for the Islanders… If I were to wager a guess, I'd say Bo is in Long Island for a month before he gets dealt to a contender for a wealth of draft picks.
best case scenario is if the islanders get the 13th overall pick.
The pick moving to a top 10 next year would be the best case scenario, there are some real solid D available next year.
Bo's a good face-off center, he's got skills and a great shot. The only knock for me is he plays too soft for a big guy.
Who do you think won the deal?
1:34 that Horvat jersey looks so strange
Hey isles fans what are we getting in Aatu??
The canucks win simply by letting horvat go and accepting their fate for the rest of the season. They will now be in a prime position to lose more games and hopefully have a higher pick in this stacked draft.
Horvat won, he got out of the tire fire.
I mean the Canucks will never win a cup either way so who cares 🤷♂️
As a 40+ year fan of this team I'm happy with the trade. I was pissed when I was watching Raty slide down the draft board and Vancouver had no picks which has become an unbearable norm. I'm hoping that Raty plays like a Jokinen and has some Horvat comparables. I think he could develop strongly in a system… hopefully Vancouver discovers one.
The protection on first could really prove interesting. Either we get a pick around 13-16 in a deep draft or we get wildcard the following year. I also like Beaulieu sorry for butchering name… but he needs a scenery change.
It gives cap space and elimates noise in the organization.
Now get a late 1st for schenn. Work on offloading Boeser, Garland, Myers and hopefully OEL… clean the state and start fresh. Utilize any dead cap space acquire assets… use some assets to dump players and get a handle on this team. Lock up Petey long term 10 million dollar boy and give him the C.
One thing is for sure. The locker room has changed. Leadership has changed. This is our competitive suck, because the Canucks don't tank. We actually suck.
Pray 🙏 to the hockey Gods for Bedard. We need you.
Upper management is totally to blame for this. Vancouver is all about culture of team and I've never seen the culture stripped of this team like this. Always a sense of pride, top management has shits the bed on their first full year.
don't regret watching this video
Nucs going for Bedard.
So now Kane becomes the guy who will be sought after. Think LA will have to give two top prospects and first at the very least. Then there's NY. Maybe Kappo or Laufranier and a high first. The Blackhawks need prospects not just a first.
I was waiting for this!!
Good trade for both teams.
Islanders gave up waaaaay too much.
Watching these highlights, Raty looks as good as Horvat at like 20 years old so.. . 😅
More teams need to make these trades sooner the deadline trades are lame anyways less games on your roster why wait make the trades now
Everyone that posts trades on capfriendly should refer to this trade. This is a normal package for a player like Horvat. A young NHL player, a top prospect and a 1st round pick. That’s the usually ask from a team.
Bailey Bo and Barzel… triple B's
