Kulak’s mobility gives him leg up on Merrill | HI/O Bonus

In this bonus episode, our panelists — Montreal Gazette columnist Stu Cowan, CBC Daybreak Montreal’s Jessica Rusnak and former Canadiens defenceman and NHL assistant coach Rick Green — along with host Julian McKenzie discuss the merits of starting Brett Kulak over Jon Merrill on the Canadiens’ blue line.

  1. Kulak is looking good after last night, but he needs to be more consistant, Merril may be having difficulty making the adjustment to a new team, however, I wouldn't be too quick to judge yet. It's been a crazy year.

  2. I agree with you folks, Kulak deserves a better fate in the line-up of defence pairings. Not sure what Ducharme is thinking with his pairings. I think Edmundson should be riding the pine come playoff time – he is slow, slow, slow. A big body, but not very mobile. Bergevin should have made the arrangements to recall young Fleury rather than bring a player like Edmundson into the fold. Hopefully another player that sits in the press box come playoff time is Staal – this guy looks like he has no desire and it is like they are playing a man short everytime he steps on the ice.

  3. geez yea no.
we as habs fans seem to focus on the third pair alot.
shouldnt romanov be getting more time ?
on the pp and pk to develop him as a nhl player?
the fact he doesnt play with weber or petry is a problem.
i dont really want to invest my fandom in players that wont be around next year.
i can tell kulak isnt in the cards …dunno why.but like mete i think someone already made up his mind with kulak.oullette, etc and all the other guys they keep using third pair hoping they will be second pair ><
    wheres guhle going to play?
he might be ready next year
if guhle plays with petry or weber…wouldnt romanov be annoyed?

  4. 👍job panel 👍I totally agree ,but one thing not mentioned is I think Weber needs to stay out .

  5. Brett Kulak did not have a single justified scratching this season.
Coaching staff dropped the ball big time this year.

Staal is a detriment to our development, Merill is a liability and Gustafvson is a clown.
So management has to bear the remainder of the 2021stink.
    (Overall, it's: 15-45-40% player/coach/front office fault)

  6. Habs fans we got Staal, Merrill and Gustafsson we are set. Habs fans sit all of them we need Kulak, Mete and Evans in.

  7. No offence to the two trade deadline pickups but I don't see Gustafsson or Merrill as meaningful upgrades to defensemen that they already had as depth players such as Ouellet, Fleury (R shot) and others plus to make the moves they lost Victor Mete who was one of the most mobile defensemen that they had for nothing and he his playing a big role for Ottawa. He was no more (and probably much less) error prone that Weber and even Jeff Petry at times. This after losing Noah Juulsen (R shot) on waivers at the start of the year. Two young promising D-men gone with no return at all. I know that I am not an expert but many of the moves made are really head scratchers . I would definitely have Kulak in the lineup ahead of more than just Merrill.

  8. Jon Merrill will never be more than a 7th D. But at least he's ok at that now.
