Today we’re going over a really strange yet intriguing idea published in the Toronto Star earlier this week, highlighting what Jack Han recently wrote about. The idea involves the Toronto Maple Leafs going with a 2-forward and 3-defenceman system, rather than having the traditional reversed setup.

Toronto Star Article: https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/opinion/2020/11/07/what-if-the-maple-leafs-experimented-with-three-defencemen-and-two-forwards-its-worth-a-shot.html

The proposed lines under this format go as follows:

– Forward pairs
– Auston Matthews-Mitch Marner
– John Tavares-William Nylander
– Alex Kerfoot-Jason Spezza
– Joe Thornton-Nick Robertson
– Ninth forward: Wayne Simmonds, Jimmy Vesey, Travis Boyd or Alexander Barabanov

– Defence trios
– Morgan Rielly-Travis Dermott-T.J. Brodie
– Timothy Liljegren-Jake Muzzin-Justin Holl
– Martin Marincin-Rasmus Sandin-Mac Hollowell

  1. Who wrote this article?? Forwards are Torontos strength, the backend is arguably the weak point?? We deploy a lineup that decreases your strengths and highlights your weakness

  2. 2 nets are the only similarities between hockey and soccer. Hockey is back and forth scoring chances, soccer is a game of keep away at midfield with a shot on goal once every 10 minutes.

  3. Why not? If they have D that can do that I'd try playing 2 forwards up and 3 D back. Get a Bowen Byram, an Owen Power to make it really work. One D plays wing on occasion, only real problem is the forecheck. Colorado is far, far better set up to to this though; Girad, Makar, Byram, they have what it takes already.

  4. Dude the leafs talk about whether or not they should use 5 forwards on the ice at one time. 3 d? Hahaha. Maybe if they had 10 million dollar defensemen.

  5. LW. Petterson CD.Quinn Hughes RW.JT Miller LD.Alex Edler RD.Nate Schidmt

  6. I believe this idea is Jurassic considering no other article for any other team has ever brought it up but this could work if you have a team like Toronto who has the offensive strength but needs to learn to keep the puck out of there net

  7. I think its better to play with 5 hockey players….. skip the role. Use positions instead, that can wary..

  8. This is so bad. The scariest thing here would be if it works…. if their 2F3D format wins them games, then you're going to see more teams doing that.
Then all the teams will be doing that.
2F3D setups will take over and overall scoring will drop.
Welcome back to the mid 2000's where TRAP hockey was king and you get a lot of 1-0 , 2-1 games..

  9. if the blue jackets do this it makes more sense, all leafs defensemen either can not defend or slow or both.

  10. We see dmen being put on forward from time to time when a team has roster issues. It doesn’t work. The glaring offensive deficiencies of the average dman become problematic when you’re trying to score goals. One ineffective player can shut a line down. And I’m talking about a D on forward, let alone if he’s well back of the play in a defense first posture as that’s his natural tendency. Yikes!

  11. this is breaking my brain a little. At first I was like no way, but the more I watched and more I thought about it. We have a couple dmen that like to play offensively, more so then defensive. if each defence trio has a stay at home guy and 2 mates that can skate it out, or make a 1st pass, does it matter how fast he skates? he will have options remember 2 d partners. not to mention how teams react to player 3 d back, could thro them off. once you exit the zone the stronger backside offensive players jumps up to the missing win. WTF knows if it would work? but its got neurons fireing forsure.

  12. Im only a teen but I have all these ideas in my head that eould turn heads. This was one and someothers are when you need hard defence up front coach yells and says seap so the 2 d-men go up snd play forward and the foreard play defence. And i wouldteach plays through NHL if the guys dont get a drill because I was a top player in 20.
And so much more like this

  13. Congratulations Toronto media, you've discovered a way to cut the average defenceman's career in half. Have fun buying out burnt out defensemen over the next decade.

  14. I talked to my dad who is my coach and said that he really likes the idea just who would sit in the crease to get in the rebounds

  15. This is piffle. It's like reinventing the wheel with the wheel. The centre is essentially the 3rd D in the D zone, the winger is responsible for high slot weak side. In the O zone, 3F is responsible for covering the pinching D. Whomever suggested this has a limited understanding of hockey.

  16. If the 3 defenders system could cut down being scored on by one or two goals a game, it might lead to more wins in a season.

  17. This wouldn't br the first time it has happened.Look back into the days of Punch Imlach at the helm.He would put three out and let them hit everything that moved.
