The Wings are getting better. I know the process has been slow, but they will be a team to watch this coming summer and into next season.

  1. Detroit is similar to Ottawa. Both teams are showing improvement but not enough to be a legitimate threat to make the playoffs. Both teams are competitive.

  2. Being from Tampa I'm excited about seeing how Steve yzerman builds his new team I think the wings are in very good hands.Of course I'm sad that he's still in our division the Atlantic and dread the day when his Wings usurp the Lighting but it is probably inevitable.

  3. Definitely been a tough season for the Wings. The recent stretch was the perfect example. Impressive wins against Toronto and Vegas but drop games to Columbus, Arizona and Philly. Some prices are together though, the Walman/Seider pairing has been especially good, along with Berggren showing up and Larkin having a career year. Hopefully, they can right the ship for a fifth or even fourth place finish in the division, they have the talent to do it.

  4. Bertuzzi and Erne are gone at trade deadline. Also wouldnt be surprised to see Suter or Hronek gone too

  5. Love the take, THG. Tbh, I'd like to see Bertuzzi flipped for something. Detroit was hamstrung this year with him being out and the past few seasons with his vaccination status. Everyone in the locker room should be committed to winning regardless and little things like that take eyes off of the prize.

  6. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks Larkin is not a super star. He is a very good player. But in reality would this top line be a top line on any playoff ready team? I doubt it. 2nd line maybe.

  7. That's the second joke THG has made about a '97 team member back on the ice since I started watching the channel and my poor nostalgic fan heart can't take it. But yeah, general feeling among fans is, I think, exactly what THG is saying here, we trust The Captain to see us through. Though, honestly, it's Detroit and Yzerman, we'd probably trust him even without the Tampa Stanley Cup wins.

  8. The guy who owns the company I work for, his son plays for the Red Wings. And he's picking up his game so that's great!

  9. Unlike many NHL organizations the entire roster needs to be ripped apart, mega coaching, staff and GM. changes or replacements are needed.
Larkin, Bertuzzi, Suter, Sundqvist and several others are up for contract renewal and none of those players seem to be able to motivate another to play better for raises. There's no leadership.
A total of 13 players-I looked on Spotrac just now-not one of them motivating the others and or having the skill on their own to do better for a raise.
Could be a place for Bruce Boudreau or Barry Trotz-GM and coach pairing.
What is that org. going to do when they've signed those 13 players and there is no financial and or players able to motivate the others for them to play well?
Contrast that with Boston who have several of their big guns, Pastrnac, Krejci and Bergeron up for contract renewal and are playing great.
My guess is that those three are talking about it constantly to motivate one another to do better and as far as I can see nothing like that is happening in Detroit.
The roster needs to be ripped apart, mega coaching, staff and GM. changes or replacements are needed.

  10. unpopular opinion: Yzerman is not doing that good. Sure he made some goods picks (Seider/Raymond) but why did he go for Chariot/Perron/Bertuzzi/Copp ? This year was the perfect year to tank but instead, they are gonna end in the no man's land. They are gonna have a good defense but the offense is not gonna be good enough to be a serious contender. I feel like they are missing true ELITE talent…Honestly they dont have a single forward as talented as : Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli, Benson, Smith, Carlsson…

  11. The only way Larkin is on the top line when the Wings get to contender-status is if they have another Larkin as their second line center.

  12. Yzerman is not the guy who could strap on and go lol his knees are toast. Lidstrom on the other hand

  13. I’m hearing Larkin wants to stay in Detroit, so I assume he’ll probably take anything they can offer him. I think the Wings stand pat at the trade deadline. They’re kind of in between buyer’s and seller’s markets at this time. In the forthcoming offseason, I see Hellberg taking the backup goalie position over Nedeljkovic, who they will eventually cut loose.

  14. The backup goalie situation is very weird to me. Ned is a good goalie and he did have several games with no help in front of him. So he gets 8 starts, gets dropped, Hellberg comes in, has barely gotten any starts, doesn't look like a straight upgrade over Ned, and now Ned is playing well in Grand Rapids. And Husso has already played too much, he can't steal games anymore because he just isn't razor sharp. I feel like the whole situation has been mismanaged.

I hope we keep Larkin, because he's been at almost a point per game pace while playing on bad teams. If the Wings can get better as a team, and start firing on all cylinders, I think Larkin will put up more points and show he's a 1st line player.

  15. I feel the Red Wings beat good teams like Vegas and Tampa but then lose to Arizona and Philadelphia

  16. Red Wings issues: lack of high end talent. Lack of team speed. Coaching is not very good. Power play is stagnant players standing still passing the puck around the perimeter. No penetration in the prime scoring areas. Team plays and is coached like a high school or college team. Chip in chip out. Chip n race. Dumping it in too much. Lack of team speed they are consistently losing puck races.

  17. I remember when YMan signed Copp. People were going nuts in Detroit, thinking he was going to be their savior and help them raise to cup contention. Haha what a joke. Copp is a no show this season. He got paid, then he slithered into the shadow of Larkin 🤦‍♂️

  18. As a Wings fan, I don't see much improvement at all. Actually given up more goals than last season. PK is worse. Lalonde doesn't give lines enough time to gain chemistry. The fact it took so long to split Seider/Chiarot up, was a joke. They don't play hard for a full 60 minutes on 90% of their games. I wouldn't pay Larkin $9mill a season either. My surprise of the season has been Jake Walman……he's been excellent recently. Berggren has been exceptional.

  19. I đź’Ż agree Shane! Larkin is great two way player and on a top red wing team, he is a 2center. I love Larkin (hoping he comes to grips with a reasonable contract). We still need that elite/franchise center. Larkin isn't that, but he doesn't need to be. We like all great teams need those two great centers. We had Sergei and Steve, we had Hank and Pav, now we need Larkin and someone else.

  20. This team picked the worst possible time to try to be not terrible. Fans have sat through a decade of shit hockey and Yzerman, without an elite Center prospect in the fold, decided to add add add this year In FA taking the team out of contention for Bedard. For what? There wasn't a free agent out there that would have made the Wings a playoff team, and even had they squeaked in, the division powers are much too good to make the Wings anything more than first round fodder. Another year of Suck could have landed this franchise the lacking piece that it needs to truly set itself up to be a perennial contender going forward. Without a Franchise C this rebuild is going no where despite the quality pieces that have been put in place. At this point the Yzerplan has come down to one of two things. Cross your fingers that a prospect GREATLY outperforms his draft position or the equally unlikely possibility that a true game changing FA signs in Detroit. Don't hold your breath fellow Detroit Fans. Brace for a half decade in the mushy middle. This isn't going to be pretty.

  21. Detroit thought they were going somewhere this year, but several players they were counting on took steps backward.

I don’t see Raymond being one; slighty less offense but defensively improved. Nedeljkovic though…not one of Yzerman’s better moves. 🥶

  22. Started with a lot of promise, but reality has bitten quite hard to remind us wings fans that we are still quite a ways away from challenging for a playoff spot. Trust the Yzerplan.

  23. It's funny because it's true, Stevie could be our 1c…after a brief stint in GR of course.

  24. Good and consistent reasoning, I agree with you on several points here, good job.

However, see no reason to play meaningful games during a deep draft year. In addition to the top 10, there are loads of promising talents right down to place 20-30 this year.

The problem is that the top 3 will probably all be taken as C and not betting on getting an opportunity to land #1 even though the odds have never been in our favor in the draft is sick. So I see it as a flop by the owner here not to use their asset management together with their GM.

Expect at least two trades during the TDL for low rounds picks to pick up multiple options to land talent or move up in the draft. Of our twelve UFA's, most will be re-signed, which means that status Q will remain. Some like Hägg e.i will not remain, but there are some we will move on from.

  25. It's not unusual for Detroit to beat a top end team (Toronto), then turn around and lose to a bottom feeder (Columbus).
