Avs Breakout Candidates. What Could Newhook and Byram's Contracts Look Like?

The NHL Twitter page posted a graphic with their Top 10 breakout candidates for next year with Alexander Georgiev and Bowen Byram making the list. Do we agree and are there other Avalanche players who could have that breakout season?

It would benefit Byram to have that breakout year considering he will be a RFA next offseason. We put our GM hats on and try to look at what contracts for the defenseman and his 1st round mate Alex Newhook could look like? Should the Avs roll the dice and let the season play out, and if one or both of them have a breakout season then have to pay up? Or do they just get those deals done ASAP?

Finally, we ask the question if the Avalanche should be at the top of any and all power rankings due to their championship and keeping key pieces of their team in tact. Or is there a team out there that had a good off-season that should leap over the Avs in the rankings?

  1. The team I've been watching what they are building for awhile and I think is right behind Colorado in power rankings is Carolina. If those young forwards take another step, oh boy that team could be really frightening. That defense has the capability at their best to really throw a wrench into our offense much like Tampa later in the finals.
Also I'm sorry Kyle but I feel like you are way too hard on Newhook, 0.5 ppg in his rookie season is a very good starting point, he could easily develop into a 50, 60 point guy very quickly, and that production you cannot find easily anywhere in free agency

  2. I have a feeling JT is going to have a monster year just in time for a new contract. He's going full Kadri.

  3. Couple things about jerseys. I have a problem with buying a uniform representing a guy who is young enough to be my son, and I always want to make sure I get a uni of someone who’s gonna be here awhile. Amiwrong?

  4. Shaggy got some hate for my boy newhook😅 I normally agree with you but I really can't wait for you to be wrong this time. Matt nieto? Damn

  5. Newhook and Byram could 100% breakout and drop crazy pts this year… I'm just worried about health

  6. Kind of like Kyle was alluding to, I thought maybe Alex Newhook's name was going to be on that 'look for a breakout year' list. Certainly want to see him take significant steps.

  7. I hate that the Avs talent down the middle (centers) significantly suffers now with Kadri gone. How long does Compher get a chance to "prove" himself at 2C? even though we all know he's no more than a 3C. They give him a month? To the deadline? Would y'all consider them ever going after Bo Horvat? He'd bring a great FO% and solid point production for less than the cost of JT Miller, and he's more of a finisher than JT Compher.

  8. Byram's breakout will come when a police officer doesn't mistake him for a fan that jumped the fence at a parade.

  9. The money will all depend on how they do this year, but I think both Newhook and Byram will get 2 year bridge deals. If they signed them right now, it would probably be a combined AAV of about $5mil between the two of them, but they'll wait til after the season for those deals. The main reason to bridge them is to buy that time until the cap goes up significantly and they can afford the long term extensions for them. The only downside to this plan is that it puts those contracts expiring at the same time as Mikko's current deal. With the cap not projected to really start increasing until after the 23-24 year, I think the bigger speculation now will be who will be traded to make room for these new contracts? I can see some rampant speculation around that topic heading into next summer's draft – which Avs player with term left on his contract will get traded, and how much can they get for him?
