After twelve days off, the Nashville Predators returned to the ice against the Vegas Golden Knights and played one of their worst games of the season. Despite Matt Duchene’s early goal, the Preds couldn’t find their groove and lost 5-1. Is this struggle to “shake off the rust” on head coach John Hynes or on core players like Duchene, Ryan Johansen, and Roman Josi?
The Predators hoped to continue their winning ways after the extended All Star break but quite the opposite happened last night at Bridgestone Arena. Nashville struggled to get shots on net, executed poorly, and allowed five different Vegas players to score five goals in a disappointing return to play. On today’s Locked On Predators we recap this performance including our “one word” to describe the game, and we have a frank conversation about WHY return to play after breaks has been a problem for Nashville. We discuss how much of last night’s loss was on-ice issues and how much may be a mental preparation issue for this team and who should take responsibility for the lapses. I was there to watch my first game in person. Their play was indeed painful. However, the experience was GREAT overall due to the organization's interaction with the crowd during the intermissions and timeouts.. You don't see that when watching the game on tv.
I will say this: the sloppiness was throughout the lineup, from top to bottom. Josi falling, leading to a breakaway for Vegas' second goal. Saros flopping out of position on the 3rd goal. Trenin with a giveaway, and also missing the net on a good chance. Josi again twirling around and then giving the puck away for another odd-man rush against. Johansen invisible. Niederreiter missing the net. Ekholm struggling to get the puck out of his own zone. The 5-game losing streak after their European vacation to start the season was a bad omen. They've shown occasional glimpses of being a decent team, but every time there's a break in the schedule or they come within a couple of points of a playoff spot, they lay an egg.
