The New York Rangers acquired forward Vladimir Tarasenko from the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

In return, the Blues are reportedly receiving winger Sammy Blais a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and Hunter Skinner. Defenceman Niko Mikkola is going with Tarasenko to the Rangers.

The 31-year-old is in the final year of his eight-year contract that comes with a $7.5-million cap hit. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the Blues will retain 50 per cent of Tarasenko’s salary.

The conditions for the first-round draft pick going to St. Louis are that they will receive the later of the two Rangers’ first-round picks (they also own the Dallas Stars’ pick). If the Stars finish with the top-10 pick it will shift to the 2024 NHL Draft.

The 2024 fourth-round will become a third-rounder if the Rangers qualify for the playoffs.

In 38 games this season, Tarasenko has 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points.

Joining the Blues as the club’s 16th-overall pick back in 2010, Tarasenko has been a key cog in St. Louis’s offensive machine for the past decade, putting up a career-best 40 goals in 2016, nearly reaching that mark on two other occasions, and topping 30 goals six times in total. He played a central role in the Blues’ run to the Stanley Cup in 2019, leading the team in scoring as it made its unexpected climb up the standings in the latter half of the season.

In 2021, Tarasenko requested a trade out of St. Louis. According to longtime Blues beat writer Rutherford, the request stemmed from the winger’s frustration with how his shoulder surgeries were managed by the Blues’ team doctors.

Despite the request, and his availability for the 2021 expansion draft, Tarasenko remained with the club and put up a career-best offensive showing in 2021-22, scoring 34 goals and 82 points in 75 games.

  1. not a fan of this kids attitude. sounds like hes insulting the lesser skilled guys as if he is as good or better than them

  2. Quick correction, Blais is back in the NHL from his AHL conditioning stint

NYR definitely won this deal, all this does is proves STL will be sellers this year

  3. good move for the rags .. i like their team .. army gets fleeced again most likely …armweak reall effed up the blues since 2019 starting with marroon and dunn, then signing the midget krud from most hated team bos .. get rid of armweak next

  4. Excellent move for both teams. Rangers get a star winger and defensive depth. It'll be touch to keep him, given the cap, but not impossible – yet that isn't what matters right now. Meanwhile, STL gets a first rounder, which they need for a rebuild. Win-Win.

  5. Good move for blues too. Vladi was not going to stay. I disagree that he's in decline. His overall game has improved even if he didn't reach the 40 goal mark as once expected. Injuries are concerning.

  6. sad to see my team become sellers, but if the season won't pan out then you might as well sell

  7. Blues won. They got a high effort player for a low effort player. They need someone to stand up for teammates besides the 150lb goalie.

  8. I'm surprised the Blues couldn't get a bit more from a different team that wanted to extend. He isn't what he used to be, but he isn't washed up either. Injury concerns? Dead set on free agency?

  9. short term nyr win. but if they dont win a cup and lose both players, then the blues basically get something for someone they were going to lose anyway. I think it's pretty fare.

  10. STL wasn't going to re-sign anyway, so at least they got something in ruturn instead of just letting Tank walk at seasons end for nothing.

  11. As a RAngers fan, Im ecstatic! They cleaned up in this deal as Blais was a drain on the team and Skinner is ? so they def got the upside of this.

  12. Kind of missing some of this entire deal. The 4th becomes a 3rd if the rangers make the playoffs which they more than likely are. Blais use to play for the Blues and was on the cup winning team, he adds grit that they really need. But the Blues can still resign Tarensenko at the end of the season, he was unhappy for a time but money has a way of changing that and he does have a family and life in STL. The only way this becomes a win for the rangers is if they win the Cup or resign Tarensenko and he performs well. If neither of those happens it's a loss for them.

  13. rangers got fleeced lol

imagine trading a 1st in the best draft ever for a rental lol

  14. Thank God
Tarensenko is lazy and hurt all the time, didn't want to play in St louis anyway
I mean we took this deal because it's probably the best that someone offered for him🤣

  15. Tarasenko used to be awesome. Now; I really don't know. He's certainly not what he was before surgery and all that. He did win rhe Cup which is great. Still; the man really declined.

  16. Trading a late first round pick and spare parts for a rental player who's carriage is about to turn back into a pumpkin is not a "BLOCKBUSTER".
